After winning their opening two matches, the Indian women's team suffered their first defeat of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 against South Africa, dealing a significant blow to their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. In a crucial Group A match played on Sunday, June 21, at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, South Africa Women defeated the Indian Women's team by 6 wickets; this victory kept South Africa's semi-final aspirations alive while leaving India in a precarious position.

With this win, South Africa has also reached four points from three matches, matching India's tally. Although India currently holds the second spot on the points table due to a superior Net Run Rate (NRR)—with South Africa in third—South Africa now has a better chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. While Harmanpreet Kaur & side can still make it to the semi-finals, the path ahead has become considerably more difficult. In this article, we will examine the scenarios regarding the Indian women's team's qualification for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals.

Scenario 1: Must win the remaining 2 group stage matches

If the Indian women's team wants to reach the semi-finals, winning both of their remaining matches is mandatory. Should India succeed in winning both games, they will conclude their group stage campaign with 8 points. Along with winning both matches, India must also ensure they maintain a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR). India is scheduled to play their next match against Bangladesh on June 24 and their final group stage match against Australia on June 28. While India might easily defeat Bangladesh, beating Australia will be far from easy—especially since the Australian team will be looking to avenge their defeat in the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup held last year.

Scenario 2: South Africa needs to lose at least one game

Apart from winning both their remaining matches, India also needs to hope that South Africa loses at least one of their remaining two games. However, the likelihood of this happening is currently negligible. South Africa is set to face the Netherlands (June 25) and Bangladesh (June 28), and the chances of them losing these matches are quite slim. That said, cricket is a game of uncertainties, and anything can happen at any time. In fact, South Africa suffered a defeat against the Netherlands during the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup, which cost them a spot in the semi-finals. If South Africa actually loses one of their matches and India wins both of their remaining games, then India and Australia will qualify with 8 points. However, a twist could arise if Australia loses their next cricket match against Pakistan—a scenario no one is currently anticipating.

Scenario 3: NRR could become the deciding factor

If both India and South Africa win their remaining two matches, all three teams—India, South Africa, and Australia—will finish with 8 points. Australia is set to face Pakistan before playing India. Since they are strong favourites to win that match as well, they will likely have all but secured a semi-final spot before even facing India.
The advantage for India Women is that they play the final match of the group stage, meaning they will be fully aware of all the possible scenarios beforehand. India might need to defeat Australia by a significant margin to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Even before the tournament began, a battle between Australia, India, and South Africa was anticipated in this "Group of Death," and the upcoming India-Australia clash will effectively determine the two semi-finalists. If India loses, Australia and South Africa will qualify; however, if India wins, any two of the three teams could qualify.
