The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 group stage is now drawing to a close, and all teams have their sights set on securing a spot in the semi-finals. Hosts England are the only team to have already booked their semi-final berth, while the battle for the remaining three spots continues.

In Group A, the contest is unfolding between India, Australia, and South Africa, with Bangladesh also holding an outside chance. Pakistan and the Netherlands have already been eliminated from the semi-final race in this group. India, Australia, and South Africa have each played four matches, and with just one final game remaining, the identity of the two semi-finalists will soon be confirmed. With eight points, Australia leads the table, followed by India in second and South Africa in third with six points.

To secure a spot in the semi-finals, Harmanpreet Kaur & side must win their final group stage match against the 6-time champion, Australia, scheduled for June 28 at Lord’s. If Team India succeeds in winning this last match, they will finish the group stage with 8 points and seal their place in the semi-finals. In this article, we will explore how the India Women team can qualify for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals.

What if India & SA both win their last fixture

If both India and South Africa succeed in winning their final matches, all three teams—India, South Africa, and Australia—will finish the group stage with 8 points each. In that scenario, the two teams with the best Net Run Rate (NRR) will advance to the semi-finals. Currently, Australia leads with an NRR of +4.724; they would need to suffer a massive defeat to drop below the others in NRR. If India defeats Australia by more than 90 runs or chases down the target within 11 overs, Australia could fall behind India in NRR. Meanwhile, South Africa would still need to beat Bangladesh by a margin of 210 runs—a feat that is currently highly unlikely. Given this, if Australia fails to reach the semi-finals from this position, it would be nothing short of a miracle.

To surpass India in NRR, South Africa would need to defeat Bangladesh by a significant margin of at least 167 runs. This clearly implies that for South Africa to reach the semi-finals, an Indian defeat is essential; otherwise, both Australia and India will secure their spots in the semi-finals.

What if India & SA both lose

However, if India loses their final match, they will need to hope for a Bangladesh victory in the day's earlier game against South Africa. If Bangladesh manages to defeat South Africa, the India women's team will still qualify despite a loss to Australia. Bangladesh will also have an outside chance in this scenario, but they must defeat South Africa by more than 100 runs and hope that India will lose by more than 130 runs against Australia.

The best part for India is that the match against Australia is the final fixture of the group stage; this means they will already be aware of the qualification scenarios before taking the field. The South African team is known for 'choking' in big matches, and they certainly won't want to make the mistake of underestimating Bangladesh. South Africa is well aware that they are far behind India in terms of Net Run Rate (NRR) and that nothing short of an Indian defeat will suffice for them. If South Africa Women beat Bangladesh and India loses to Australia, then Australia and South Africa will qualify for the semi-finals.

India and Australia last faced each other in the Women’s World Cup 2025 semi-final, where the Women in Blue defeated Australia—thanks to a century by Jemimah Rodrigues—and knocked them out of the tournament. Now, Team India will aim to replicate that performance, while Australia will take the field intent on avenging that defeat.
