Women's ODI World Cup 2025: Australian players molested in Indore
As Indore’s Holkar Stadium prepared to host one of the most anticipated encounters of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup - Australia vs South Africa, the city awoke to a deeply disturbing incident that has cast a shadow over its reputation for warmth and safety. On Thursday morning, two members of the Australian women’s cricket team were allegedly molested while walking from their hotel, the Radisson Blu, to a nearby cafe, The Neighborhood, located on Khajrana Road.
According to reports, the players were out for a short morning stroll when a man, later identified as Aqeel, began following them on a motorcycle. He reportedly attempted to engage them in conversation before inappropriately touching one of the cricketers and speeding away from the scene. The shaken players immediately informed team officials, who contacted local authorities. Police have since launched an investigation and detained the accused. The incident has sparked outrage among fans and officials alike, prompting calls for stronger security measures to ensure the safety of international athletes during major tournaments in India.
According to reports, the shocking incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Thursday. The two Australian players, visibly shaken, immediately sent an emergency message and their live location to the team’s security officer, Danny Simmons. Recounting the moment, Simmons said, “I was reading their message when one of the players called me, crying. She told me what had happened. We immediately dispatched a car and brought them safely back to the hotel.” His quick response ensured the players were out of harm’s way within minutes.
Meanwhile, a bystander who witnessed the incident managed to note down the suspect’s bike registration number, which proved crucial in the subsequent police investigation. Using CCTV footage from the area, law enforcement was able to trace the accused’s movements. An FIR was promptly registered at the MIG Police Station based on Simmons’s complaint. In an unusually swift and coordinated response, five police stations - Vijay Nagar, MIG, Khajrana, Pardeshipura, and Kanadiya, joined forces to track down the suspect. Within six hours, the accused, identified as Aqeel, a resident of Khajrana with a history of criminal activity, was arrested from Azad Nagar. The rapid action drew praise from both local authorities and cricket officials.
“A case was registered on the basis of the complaint received from the Australian team's security officer. The accused was identified through CCTV footage and arrested within hours. He has a prior criminal record. We are examining any lapse in security protocol," Additional DCP (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotiya said.
“We are deeply saddened, shocked, and appalled by this unfortunate incident. No woman should have to endure such behavior. It is extremely painful for the players, for the sports community, and for the people of Indore. One person's act has tarnished the city's image of warmth and respect," Mahaanaryaman Scindia, President of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association stated.
