Who will be the new KKR captain after Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement?

Ajinkya Rahane recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Following his retirement, the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will now begin the search for a new captain. Rahane captained KKR for two seasons; however, the team's performance under his leadership was mediocre, and they failed to qualify for the playoffs in both seasons. Now, with Rahane's retirement, KKR suddenly finds itself without a captain. According to some reports, KKR is in constant contact with the Mumbai Indians and is making persistent efforts to acquire Hardik Pandya. KKR had released their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, subsequently purchasing Rahane in the auction and handing him the team's reins.

If KKR succeeds in acquiring Pandya, they might well consider appointing him as captain; however, if that doesn't happen, the team could face significant challenges in finding a new leader. Although Rinku Singh has currently been named vice-captain, it is unlikely he will be handed the captaincy given his limited experience. Rinku did captain the team in a few matches last season, but the team's performance remained quite ordinary.

"Over the years, we've seen Rinku Singh evolve not only as a cricketer but also as a leader," KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar had said. 

"For the past couple of years, while his performances have spoken for themselves, I think off the field, without saying a lot, he is someone the team naturally looks up to. We wanted him to shoulder a little more responsibility, and I feel it's the perfect time, after becoming a World Cup champion, to support Ajinkya Rahane and gradually take on a bigger leadership role." 

Rinku Singh also didn’t do anything special with the bat. In the last 3 seasons, he has scored 669 runs in 33 innings. He scored 295 runs in IPL 2026, 206 runs in IPL 2025, and 168 runs in IPL 2024. In domestic cricket, he has led Meerut Mavericks to the UPT20 title in 2024 before guiding them to a runners-up finish in 2025, winning 13 of their 18 matches across the 2 seasons. He has also captained Uttar Pradesh in List A cricket since replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar ahead of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
