Star wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan is currently the front-runner to become the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for IPL 2026, in the absence of Pat Cummins. Cummins is set to miss the opening matches of IPL 2026 due to a lingering back injury (lumbar stress issue).  In this situation, the SRH management is currently considering a candidate who will lead the side in the absence of their regular skipper, and reports suggest Ishan Kishan could take over the team's captaincy, while his partner Abhishek Sharma could be considered for the vice-captaincy role.

Ishan Kishan finally got a chance to return to Team India after 2 years of hard work, and he continued his brilliant performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026, playing a major role in helping Team India defend the title. He was the second-highest run-scorer for the Indian team, scoring 317 runs in 9 innings at an average of 35.22 and a strike rate of 193.29. He smashed 3 half-centuries during the tournament.

Ishan Kishan IPL stats

Ishan Kishan has played 3 IPL franchises so far. He made his IPL debut in 2016 for the Gujarat Lions. After playing 2 seasons for GL, Ishan Kishan became a part of the Mumbai Indians. He played for the MI franchise from 2018 to 2024. Last year, he was acquired by SRH for 11.25 cr INR.

He has amassed 2998 runs in 112 innings of 119 matches, including a century and 17 half-centuries. He played with an average of 29.14 and a strike rate of 137.64. He also contributed behind the stumps with 59 catches and 5 catches. Last season, he scored 354 runs for SRH, including a century and a half-century.

Ishan Kishan's captaincy record

Ishan Kishan has led the Jharkhand side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. Under his captaincy, Jharkhan won the SMAT title, winning 10 out of 11 matches throughout the tournament. He was the leading run scorer of the tournament, with 517 runs. He also captained Jharkhand in three matches during the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season, leading the team to two wins, while one match ended in a draw.

Before this, he also captained the India U-19 team in the U-19 World Cup 2016, which reached the final. Based on his captaincy stats, he seems highly likely to become SRH's captain. Travis Head, who recently captained Australia in a few matches, could also be a potential captain.

SRH is the winner of the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League. Then, they were also the runners-up of the 2018 & 2024 editions. Well, they are eyeing their second IPL trophy and will hope to end the drought in the upcoming season.
