West Indies cricket rocked by sexual assault allegations against star player
Just a day after the defeat against Australia in the first Test at home, West Indies cricket has come under fire due to serious allegations. A star player, part of the senior national team, has been named in sexual assault charges. Currently active in the national squad, the player has been accused of serious sexual misconduct by at least 11 women, including one teenager, according to a local report dated June 27 report in Guyana. The allegations span rape, sexual assault, harassment, and unwelcome advances.
Shocking claims pile up against star West Indies player amid the Test series against Australia
One of the survivors, just 18 at the time, alleges she was assaulted by the player on March 3, 2023, inside a residence in New Amsterdam, Berbice. Her family claims the cricketer picked her up under the pretext of a social gathering and took her to a house where others were present. Believing she was in a safe environment, she followed him upstairs, where he allegedly raped her. The family has also accused both the player’s associates and local law enforcement in Guyana of actively trying to bury the case.
Since the publication of the report, additional women have stepped forward with accusations, sharing materials such as voice recordings, medical documents, screenshots, and messages to back their claims. One survivor recounted being offered hush money by the player, which her family refused. None of the claims, however, has led to formal charges so far. Meanwhile, numerous reports accuse Guyanese law enforcement of obstructing justice, with some alleging interference from powerful individuals connected to the player’s family.
Claims of “stonewalling” and intimidation tactics have further raised concerns about institutional integrity in handling the matter. Shockingly, This isn't the first time the cricketer has faced such accusations. He was previously arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a minor relative. However, the case was closed after the victim retracted her statement, and no charges were filed.
Despite the cloud of allegations, the player was a member of the West Indies team that pulled off a stunning Test win over Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane in January 2024. On his return to Guyana, he was welcomed as a hero, even as unresolved accusations loomed over him. These explosive claims have surfaced publicly during the current Test series against Australia, placing added scrutiny on the sport’s authorities and their handling of the issue.
