India earned another century-hitter early on Day 2 of the opening Test in England. The second day of the first India vs England Test witnessed Rishabh Pant scoring his seventh Test ton. Moreover, the century, off 146 deliveries, marked Pant's third ton on English soil. The newly appointed vice-captain mixed his natural instincts with some restraint in his attacking game to join Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third batsman to pile on a ton in Leeds. The southpaw took on Shoaib Bashir, hitting a sixer in quintessential Pant style to get to his century.

India vs England: Rishabh Pant celebrates his seventh Test ton with his trademark Cartwheel at Leeds

With this century, Rishabh Pant now holds the record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter, surpassing MS Dhoni, who has six centuries to his credit. Pant’s seventh ton puts him alongside elite company, as he joins England’s Matt Prior, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, South Africa’s AB de Villiers, and New Zealand’s BJ Watling on the all-time list for wicketkeeper-centurions in Test cricket. Pant also etched his name in history as the visiting wicketkeeper with the most centuries on English soil. His third Test hundred in England is unmatched as no other overseas wicketkeeper has scored more than one century in the country.

The 27-year-old reached his latest milestone in trademark style, hammering Shoaib Bashir over the ropes with a one-handed six to bring up his hundred in 146 deliveries. The Headingley crowd acknowledged the achievement with a standing ovation, to which Pant responded with a grin and his signature somersault celebration, drawing an even louder cheer from the stands.

Having walked in during the third and final session on Day 1 of the opening India vs England Test, Pant wasted no time setting the tone. He danced down the track to smash a straight boundary off Ben Stokes, signaling his intent. Resuming on 65* the following morning, Pant picked up right where he left off, playing with controlled aggression and launching counterattacks against Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes. India have maintained a firm grip on the Test since being sent in to bat first. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the visitors a strong start with a 91-run partnership, before Jaiswal and skipper Shubman Gill took over with dominating centuries of their own to solidify India’s advantage in the series opener.
