Watch: Aiden Markam's match-winning 136 ends with just six short of historic finish
After playing a knock that will be remembered for years to come, Aiden Markam was dismissed just six runs short of the target, on day 4 of the World Test Championship 2025 final against Australia on Saturday. South Africa needed just six runs to win their maiden World Test Championship title. Aiden Markram, who had done all the hard work, attempted an expansive shot but found Travis Head instead. A length delivery pitched on the middle and leg, Markram looked to hit it on the leg side for a four but couldn’t keep it down. Travis Head stationed at mid-wicket caught it with both ends but there was hardly any celebration from the Australians and rightly so.
Everyone, in fact, came to applaud him as the South African walked back after playing a gem of a knock.
Here’s a look at the video clip of the dismissal:

Chasing a 282-run target at Lord’s against a lethal Australian pace attack wasn't going to be easy. Not a lot of people had backed Proteas to pull that off, especially after Mitchell Starc’s resilience with the bat had stretched the lead to over 250. However, Aiden Markram had other plans. He has had an outstanding record with the bat against Australia and was going to be key for South Africa in the run-chase.
The conditions on day 3 also helped to an extent. There was less seam movement and Markram along with Temba Bavuma ensured that they bat with a positive intent. Both didn’t miss the opportunity to score runs and went on to stitch a match-defining partnership of 147 runs for the third wicket. Early on the fourth day, Temba Bavuma got out after playing a valuable knock of 66 but Markram ensured he stayed there and carried his team home.
The footwork was pristine; he was as good with his drives off the front foot as he was with the pull shots off the back foot. South Africa eventually beat Australia by five wickets to clinch WTC Final 2025.
