Rajasthan Royals’ 15-year-old batting sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, made history against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday in the IPL 2026 Eliminator. On the Mullanpur ground, Sooryavanshi played a blistering innings of 97 runs off just 29 balls, propelling the Rajasthan Royals into Qualifier 2. In his destructive innings, he struck a total of 5 fours and 12 sixes. During this innings, Sooryavanshi also broke Chris Gayle's record for the most sixes hit in a single IPL season—a feat Gayle achieved during the 2013 IPL—which stood at 59. Vaibhav has now smashed a total of 65 sixes in the IPL 2026 season.

Unfortunately, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi narrowly missed breaking Chris Gayle's record for the fastest IPL century (30 balls vs. Pune Warriors India, 2013). Vaibhav had reached 97 runs off 28 balls and stood on the verge of scoring the fastest-ever century; however, the ball flew towards the third-man region, where Smaran Ravichandran caught it. Fans were left stunned by Vaibhav's dismissal. The commentary panel, along with the fans, expressed their deep disappointment at the turn of events. Everyone gave Vaibhav a standing ovation and lauded his magnificent innings. Driven by his spectacular performance, the Rajasthan Royals—batting first after being invited to do so—posted a mammoth total of 243 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for 196 runs in 19.2 overs, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.

Cricket fans across social media platforms heaped praise on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his extraordinary innings. Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag went so far as to say that if he were a selector for the Indian team, he would give Vaibhav Sooryavnshi a direct spot in Team India. Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, and several former cricketers applauded his tremendous innings.

Following the victory in the Eliminator, the Rajasthan Royals have qualified for Qualifier 2, where they will take on the Gujarat Titans on 29 May, Friday. The winner of Qualifier 2 will meet Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the finals on May 31, at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Gujarat Titans will undoubtedly have their eyes on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's batting, and they will surely take the field with some major plans to contain him. It remains to be seen how Vaibhav fares against the GT bowlers in Qualifier 2.
