Top 5 Indian batters with the most sixes in Test Cricket ft. Rishabh Pant
In modern-day cricket, massive sixes and big totals have become a common sight for fans. The new generation batters have become more fearless as flatter pitches have helped them play their shots with ease. Numerous Indian players showcase their fearless hitting display in the Indian Premier League every year. However, not many can replicate a similar impact in Test cricket. Hailed as the truest format of the game, Test cricket is more about patience and grit than just hitting every ball out of the park. The pitches in Test cricket test you as a batter. The red ball moves a lot more in the air, and if there is help from the surface, it becomes even tougher for the batter.
As the game progresses, the pitches deteriorate and spinners come into play. The batters need to adapt more to the conditions and play accordingly. It tests your patience and ability to bat in different conditions. Having said that, there have been some Indian batters who have managed to bat aggressively in the longest format and put the opposition under serious pressure with counter-attacking display. Batters have showcased their six-hitting ability in Test cricket, and some of them hold their place in the tally of most sixes hit by Indian batters in Test cricket.
In this article, let's take a look at who are the top five Indian batters with the most sixes in Test cricket:
1. Virender Sehwag - 90 sixes in 103 Tests
In today's age, the 'Bazball' draws a lot of attention; however, the one who actually revolutionized batting in Test cricket was Virender Sehwag. He would take on the bowlers with the new ball and hit sixes at will. Be it Glenn McGrath or Shane Warne, be it Muttiah Muralitharan or Dale Steyn, Virender Sehwag would take on every bowler in the same manner.
Despite playing aggressively, Virender Sehwag would pile on massive scores in Test cricket. He has, in fact, two triple centuries in red-ball cricket- the only Indian batter to do so. Virender Sehwag currently holds the record for the most sixes hit by an Indian batter in Test cricket with 90 maximums to his name.
2. Rishabh Pant - 88 sixes in 46 Tests
In his maiden Test, Rishabh Pant smashed his second ball for a massive six over long-off, and that began his great love story with the red ball. Known for his aggressive hitting and unconventional shots, Pant has had the most success in Test cricket format so far in his career.
Thanks to his consistent hitting, he has owned the number five spot in India’s Test batting line-up. He has been appointed as the vice-captain of India’s Test team for the ongoing Test series against England. In just 46 Test matches so far, Rishabh Pant has hit as many as 88 sixes - the second most by an Indian batter.
3. Rohit Sharma - 88 sixes in 67 Tests
Former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma made his Test debut on 6th November 2013, hitting back-to-back centuries. However, inconsistent form saw him getting dropped soon after. Rohit’s Test career revived under the Kohli and Shastri era when he was promoted to open in 2019.
In his comeback Test, he scored consecutive centuries, scoring 529 runs in the entire series. He also proved his mettle in England in 2021, scoring 127 at the Oval. While Rohit Sharma has played with extreme caution in red-ball cricket, he never missed out on any opportunity to hit sixes. In his Test cricket career, Rohit Sharma hit 88 sixes in 67 Test matches. He officially called time on his Test cricket career on 7th May 2025.
4. MS Dhoni - 78 sixes in 90 Tests
Test cricket was the least successful for MS Dhoni, both as a captain and a batter. However, he did manage to etch his name in the record books. In his Test cricket career, MS Dhoni hit 78 sixes in 90 Tests, which is currently the fourth-most number of sixes hit by an Indian batter.
While MS Dhoni was quite successful with the bat in Asian conditions, his technique wasn't ideal to bat in countries like in Australia, England, and South Africa. MS Dhoni scored 4876 runs at an average of 38.09, including six centuries.
5. Ravindra Jadeja- 74 sixes in 83 Tests
There is no denying that Jadeja has been a valuable asset for the Indian team across formats. In his early years, Ravindra Jadeja wasn’t consistent with the bat in Test cricket; however, in the last few years, he has been piling on runs heavily while batting lower down the order. Jadeja played a phenomenal knock of 61 off 181 balls in the recently concluded Lord’s Test. Overall, he has scored 3697 runs in 83 Test matches, including four centuries. He has hit 74 sixes in his Test cricket career so far.
