RCB vs CSK IPL 2025 match

Three turning points in the RCB vs CSK IPL 2025 match

Credits: IPL/X

Name every ingredient that defines a textbook thriller in the IPL. The match between arch-rivals at the Chinnaswamy had them all. The first innings saw a fiery start, a subdued middle-over phase, and death-over hitting that turned the tides. The chase featured a young 17-year-old rising to the occasion with the assistance of a seasoned all-rounder. A last over with just 15 to defend. The last ball requiring a boundary for the win. To top it all off, a controversial dismissal that would keep the internet alive days after the match's actual conclusion. While that summary probably misses out on defining the pulse of the teams and the fans in the moment as the thriller unfolded, it sums up the RCB vs CSK IPL 2025 match.

Key moments from the RCB vs CSK IPL 2025 match

Coming to the RCB vs CSK match, the five-time champions had nothing to lose. Already eliminated from the IPL 2025 playoffs and placed at the bottom of the points table, things couldn’t have gone any worse for them. However, there was still a chance for revenge. Revenge for their IPL 2024 ouster at the hands of RCB. There was also the opportunity to make up for their failure to avenge that defeat in their earlier meeting this season, the CSK vs RCB IPL 2025 match. In a sporting sense, CSK had a chance to spoil RCB’s party as the latter aimed for a Top 2 finish in the IPL 2025 playoffs. But none of it materialized, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru edged past Chennai Super Kings by 2 runs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

A fiery start for RCB, courtesy of Virat Kohli and Jacob Bethell

MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to chase in the RCB vs CSK match. Put to bat first, RCB cleared their intent for the victory right at the start. Jacob Bethell and Virat Kohli unleashed a fiery onslaught, taking seamlessly on Khaleel Ahmed smashing three boundaries in his opening over and three sixes in the next. A potential early breakthrough was dropped in a dramatic collision between Pathirana and Jadeja while attempting the catch of Bethell. Chennai’s wayward bowling only aided RCB’s momentum as Bethell and Kohli added 71 runs in the powerplay.

Ravindra Jadeja offered some resistance with a tight seventh over, but the momentum quickly went back as Sam Curran entered the attack. It took a sensational effort from Dewald Brevis to dismiss Jacob Bethell at 55 off 33 against Pathirana. Kohli, however, responded by smashing 17 runs off Jadeja’s next over, pushing RCB past 100 in just 11 overs. He eventually fell to a slower short ball from Curran, slicing it to Khaleel at third man. RCB’s momentum dipped slightly as Noor and Curran bowled a few tight overs, but the tempo was about to change.

Romario Shepherd's explosive finish powered the total to 213, undoing the control CSK bowlers had built during the middle overs

Romario Shepherd turned the game on its head in the final stretch. Despite a fiery start, CSK looked poised to restrict the RCB total below 190. However, all the progress made by Noor Ahmad and Ravindra Jadeja in the middle came unwinded at the death. After the dismissals of Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, and Jitesh Sharma who could not impact the run-scoring cause, Romario Shepherd came out. Meanwhile, Khaleel Ahmed topped Anshul Kamboj in the pecking order to bowl the penultimate over. Tim David stood at the other end as Shepherd kicked off the onslaught.

Bludgeoning 53* off just 14 balls, equalling the second-fastest fifty in IPL history, Shepherd launched six sixes in the last dozen deliveries. He tore apart Khaleel’s penultimate over for 33 runs before smashing two fours and two sixes in the final over against Pathirana. Tim David contributed just two runs in a 57-run stand for the sixth wicket. RCB finished at a formidable 213 off 5.

CSK fumbled the finish despite a fighting 94-run knock from the young Ayush Mhatre

The chase looked like a steep hill to climp with CSK fielding the record of being unable to chase par 180-run total since IPL 2022.  However, with young blood at the fore, the predictions dwindled. Shaik Rasheed struck early blows against Dayal before 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre took off against Bhuvneshwar Kumar, smashing five fours and a six in one over. CSK lost Rasheed and Curran during the powerplay, but Mhatre and Jadeja stitched together a gritty counterattack. Mhatre reached a 25-ball fifty with a six off Suyash Sharma and followed it up with a brutal over against Shepherd, helping CSK cross 100 in 10 overs.

Jadeja also found rhythm, and both batters neutralized the threat from Ngidi and Bhuvneshwar. As Jadeja brought up a 29-ball fifty, CSK entered the final five overs needing 54. A dropped catch from Ngidi gave Jadeja a life, but the South African bounced back by dismissing Mhatre for 94 and trapping Brevis LBW on the next ball. Unfortunately for CSK, Brevis couldn’t review the decision in time. A wayward looking trajectory was adjudged out by the on-field umpires. With no timer in sight, Brevis and Jadeja's call for the DRS was overturned. In a sight that would hurt Brevis and CSK fans for days to come, the replay showed it would’ve been overturned as the ball missed the stumps.

Suyash delivered a clutch 18th over, conceding just six to Jadeja and Dhoni. Needing 29 off 12, Jadeja and Dhoni trimmed the requirement to 15 off 6. Yash Dayal, under immense pressure, removed Dhoni but also bowled a waist-high no-ball that Dube deposited into the stands. However, with six needed off three, Dayal nailed three perfect deliveries at the death, sealing a dramatic win for RCB.
