Three turning points from the KKR vs RR IPL 2025 match
WHAT A GAME! The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have held their nerves remarkably well to pull off a sensational 1-run victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in an edge of the seat thriller during the 53rd game of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season being played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The game switched sides numerous times as players from both the teams showed some exceptional fighting spirit, but eventually, the Rajasthan Royals fell short by the barest of margin. This is the fifth victory in IPL 2025 for defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders from their 11 matches and they have now reached the fifth position on the points table.
KKR vs RR IPL 2025: Russell's explosive fifty helps Kolkata reach a challenging score of 206 runs
After winning the toss and surprisingly opting to bat first at home, the Kolkata Knight Riders did not had the best of starts losing the wicket of their premier opening batter Sunil Narine with just 13 runs on the scoreboard. The other KKR opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz also failed to convert his start of 35 runs while skipper Ajinkya Rahane was too dismissed at the score of 30 runs. The Kolkata Knight Riders team management took a bold decision and promoted Andre Russell at the fifth spot.
This move by the home team gave huge dividends immediately as Russell smacked a wonderful unbeaten knock of 57 runs off just 25 balls that included 6 sixes and 4 fours. He stitched an impressive 61-run partnership alongside Angkrish Raghuvanshi to power the Kolkata Knight Riders towards a challenging score of 206 for 4 in their quota of 20 overs.
Riyan Parag's magnificent six-hitting prowess ensures a superb RR comeback
In reply, it was another poor start for the Rajasthan Royals as they ended up losing as many as two wickets for only 8 runs on the board. Within a matter of 7.5 overs, the visitors found themselves reeling at 71 for 5 after which RR captain Riyan Parag took the crease alongside Shimron Hetmyer. Parag turned his dream into reality as he smacked Moeen Ali for five consecutive towering sixes in a single over to ease down the required run-rate. He also notched up a staggering reverse-sweep six in the next over off Varun Chakravarthy to make it six back-to-back sixes.
Riyan Parag played an outstanding innings of 95 runs off just 45 balls that included 8 sixes and 6 fours before getting dismissed by Harshit Rana. However, before losing his wicket, he had already brought equation in favour of Rajasthan Royals.
Final over drama in the KKR vs RR IPL 2025 match
After taking the prized scalp of Riyan Parag, Kolkata Knight Riders' speedster Harshit Rana brought another twist in the game as he got the better of Shimron Hetmyer to pull things back for his side. With Shubman Dubey and Jofra Archer at the crease, the Rajasthan Royals needed 22 runs off the final over which was to be bowled by Vaibhav Arora. Archer took a couple of runs off the first delivery and then took a single on the second ball of the 20th over.
Shubman Dubey once again changed the script by hitting two sixes and a boundary off the next three balls to make it three runs needed from the final ball of the match. However, the final over drama eventually ended in Kolkata Knight Riders' favour as Dubey could only manage a single run off the last ball. Vaibhav bowled a fantastic yorker under pressure to seal the deal for KKR.
Another day, another #TATAIPL classic 🤩@KKRiders prevail by 1️⃣ run in a last-ball thriller in Kolkata to boost their playoff hopes 👏💜
