T20 World Cup 2026: Washington Sundar set to play IND vs NAM match? Here's the update
In a significant boost for the Indian camp, all-rounder Washington Sundar has rejoined the squad during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Sundar linked up with the 15-member team in New Delhi ahead of their Group A fixture against Namibia, scheduled to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday, February 12. His return comes at a crucial juncture as India look to maintain momentum in the early stages of the tournament. Fresh from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, Sundar wasted no time settling back into the team environment. Shortly after his arrival, he took part in an extended and high-intensity net session on Tuesday evening, training alongside the rest of the squad for a couple of focused hours.
T20 World Cup 2026: Washington Sundar ruled out of IND vs NAM match?
Washington Sundar appeared sharp and eager, quickly getting back into rhythm with both bat and ball. Speaking about his return, Sundar expressed genuine happiness at being back in the dressing room. He noted that the team’s morale is high following their confident victory over the USA in the tournament opener. According to him, the positive energy within the group and the clarity of roles have created a strong atmosphere, one that the players are keen to build on in the matches ahead.
"It's always nice to be over here with the boys and training. It was quite an intense session, and we ticked all the boxes. We did a very good fielding session, and obviously I got to bowl a lot. And obviously batted as well. So it's really nice to be over here," stated Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar.
"The atmosphere is amazing. The last three weeks were really good in terms of how I prepared and how much work I've put in myself to sort of come here and to be able to be really ready for the tournament. So just really looking forward to the second game," he added.
For those unaware, Washington Sundar had been sidelined after experiencing acute discomfort around his lower rib, an issue that ruled him out of the recently concluded multi-format series against New Zealand. The injury required careful monitoring, prompting him to spend several weeks at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Under the supervision of the board’s medical staff, Sundar underwent rehabilitation and conditioning work to ensure he regained full fitness in time for the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. His steady recovery paved the way for his return to the national setup at a crucial stage of the tournament.
With Sundar back in contention, he is likely to get valuable game time in the upcoming clash against Namibia. However, India’s relief has been tempered by fresh concerns over Abhishek Sharma’s availability. The young opener has reportedly been admitted to a private hospital in New Delhi after suffering from a stomach infection. The illness occurred shortly after the team attended a dinner hosted at head coach Gautam Gambhir’s residence. As a result, Abhishek is expected to miss the Namibia fixture, forcing the team management to consider alternative combinations at the top of the order.
