Sanju Samson—the man who lifts the Indian team single-handedly into the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. He played a memorable unbeaten 97 runs knock, including 12 fours and 4 sixes, while chasing 196 against the West Indies in a do-or-die. Defeat in this match would have eliminated defending champions and hosts India from the World Cup and forfeited the title. At such a crucial juncture, Sanju Samson saved his country's pride. He played the best innings of his life.

For a long while, Sanju Samson’s fans have been wanting justice for him. After the 2024 World Cup, Sanju Samson finally earned a place in India’s T20 setup. In 2024, he smashed 3 centuries, and it was felt that he would become a permanent opener for the Indian team. However, the following year (2025) proved turbulent. A string of failures as an opener against England cost him both his preferred opening slot and his place in the playing XI.

Shubman Gill replaced him as an opener, and he was also appointed vice-captain. But when Gill struggled to make an impact, Samson was handed back his favoured role.

But just before the T20 World Cup 2026, during the series against New Zealand, he endured a nightmare run. Fans who once backed him began calling for Ishan Kishan to take over as opener. When Kishan donned the wicketkeeping gloves in the final match of that series, it all but confirmed that Samson would be benched.

Then came the World Cup. India managed to win all their group-stage matches, but their performances were far from convincing. Abhishek Sharma failed to score in the group stage, while Tilak Varma struggled at No. 3. South Africa's 76-run crushing of India in the Super 8 exacerbated the team's problems, pushing them to the verge of elimination. To qualify for the semi-finals, India not only had to win but do so emphatically—which meant solid starts at the top. Yet opposing teams had repeatedly neutralised India’s openers.

In this high-pressure scenario, the team once again turned to one of their most experienced campaigners—Samson. He justified that faith immediately, blasting 22 off just 8 balls against Zimbabwe and setting the tone for a massive total of 256.

But destiny had reserved something even bigger for him. In the final Super 8 clash of the 2026 T20 World Cup against the West Indies, India faced a do-or-die chase of 196. The pressure mounted quickly as India lost their first two wickets in the powerplay—Abhishek Sharma (10) and Ishan Kishan (10). From here, Sanju showcased his calmness and patience. Sanju Samson stayed at one end and kept scoring runs. He added 58 for the third wicket with captain Suryakumar Yadav, 52 for the fourth wicket with Tilak Verma, and 38 for the fifth wicket with Hardik Pandya and then finished the match with Shivam Dube. Like Virat Kohli, he remained unbeaten till the end and returned to the pavilion only after finishing the match. After playing the match-winning knock, he also mentioned his tough times and inspirations.

"It means the whole world, actually, to me. I think right from the day I started playing, I started dreaming of playing for the country. I think this is the day I was waiting for. And very grateful, very thankful. And I’ve always had a very special journey with lots of ups and downs, but I’ve kept on doubting myself, kept on thinking, "What if? What if? Can I make it? Can I make it?" But I kept on believing, and thanks to the Lord Almighty for actually blessing me today. So I’m very happy (with role clarity with his batting). Yeah, I think that’s why I have been playing this format for a very long time.

“looking from the dugout, learning from the greats like Virat Kohli, from Rohit Sharma, like all the greats. I think that really helped me to, I think with my experience, I have only played maybe 50, 60 games, but I’ve seen around 100 games and I’ve seen how the greatest people have finished the games.”

“I think this is one of the greatest days of my life. (on the crowd support here) Yeah, definitely they do bring lot of energy and they do bring lot of support. But I think on the other end, there is always a question, what if not? (smiles loudly) So definitely that keeps on playing in your mind. But when that thought kept on coming, I just brought myself into the present moment and just looked at the ball and trusted myself to react according to the ball in merit. So I think that worked out pretty well today."
