The Indian team faced significant criticism following their recent 0-2 T20I series loss to Ireland. Former captain Sunil Gavaskar went so far as to label this defeat one of the lowest points in the history of Indian cricket, attributing the loss to the team's overconfidence and careless attitude.

Ireland defeated Shreyas Iyer's side by 34 runs in the first T20I and by a solitary run in the second, securing a historic series victory—an outcome few had anticipated. Despite sending a squad comprising many members of their full-strength team—with an eye on the ongoing England tour and the upcoming Asian Games—India was stunned by Ireland.

Gavaskar found the defeat particularly disappointing because Ireland did not play any extraordinary cricket; rather, it was India's poor approach that gifted them this historic series win.

"Sunday, June 28, will go down as one of the worst days in Indian cricket. Losing a game of cricket is one thing, but to lose a series, albeit a two-match series, also depends on whom you lose to. There are many low points in Indian cricket, and I have been a part of some, but to lose to Ireland has to be one of the lowest in the history of Indian cricket. If Ireland had played exceptional cricket, then it would have lessened the blow. It was simply overconfidence and a sense of casualness that let India down, and that’s why the sadness," wrote Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar drew a parallel between the Indian batters' performance and that of the West Indies team during the 1983 World Cup final at Lord's, where India had shocked the formidable West Indies side—who were considered the overwhelming favorites to win. According to Gavaskar, the Indian batters displayed the same kind of carelessness and ultimately paid the price for failing to adapt to the conditions, much like the West Indies had done in the 1983 final.

"It was very much like the West Indies in the final of the 1983 World Cup. When you look at West Indies batters’ dismissals, you will see the same overconfidence and casualness that we saw from the Indian batters in both games against Ireland."

This legendary batsman believes that Indian batters needed to adjust their approach after playing on batting-friendly pitches during the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL); however, they failed to do so and threw away their wickets while attempting unnecessary shots. Had they played with a better understanding of the conditions, the outcome could have been different.

"Playing according to the situation is such an important aspect of any sport, especially cricket, but almost all the Indian batters tried to live up to their image and, on pitches that had a little extra carry and bounce, found that they were dismissed very easily by some good catching allied to smart bowling."

The series defeat against Ireland has raised serious questions regarding the attitude of the 'Men in Blue'. Team India is currently touring England, and if the series result does not go in India's favor, we might witness some major changes in the shortest format of the game.
