Shubman Gill earned the praise of the modern-day Indian Test legend himself, as he broke multiple records with his heroic batting in the Edgbaston Test. Not one to post much on social media, Virat Kohli took to Instagram and shared a story lauding the young Indian Test captain. Shubman Gill topped his brilliant double ton in the first innings with a match-defining century in the second innings of the India vs England Test in Birmingham. As the new skipper etched his name in the record charts, the youngster earned a nod of approval from India’s now-retired No. 4 in Tests, a position Gill has claimed following Kohli’s recent retirement.

Virat Kohli lauds Shubman Gill after the Indian skipper hits another ton in the Edgbaston Test

Virat Kohli was all praise for Shubman Gill following the latter’s phenomenal performance in the Edgbaston Test, where the young Indian skipper delivered two masterful innings. Leading the charge with the bat, the 25-year-old racked up a remarkable 430 runs across both innings, playing a pivotal role in setting England a towering target of 608 runs.

Gill laid the foundation with a brilliant 269 in the first innings and returned in the second to add a composed 161, firmly placing India in command of the contest. Kohli, who recently bid farewell to Test cricket after the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy, commended Gill for “rewriting history” with his extraordinary feat.

Powered by Gill’s twin centuries, India crossed a major milestone by becoming the first Indian team to score over 1,000 runs in a single Test match, eclipsing their previous best of 916 against Australia in 2004 at the SCG. The individual performance of Shubman Gill, moreover, etched his name among the greats, as his total of 430 runs in a single Test stands as the second-highest ever. Only England’s Graham Gooch has scored more in a Test match, with his 456 (333 and 123) against India at Lord’s in 1990.

In doing so, Gill became just the second cricketer in Test history to score 150+ runs in both innings of a Test, matching the legendary Allan Border. He is also the second batter in the ongoing series to notch twin hundreds, after Rishabh Pant achieved the same during the first Test at Headingley. Gill now joins an elite list as the eighth Indian to register centuries in both innings of a Test and the third Indian captain to do so, following in the footsteps of Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli himself. Moreover, by scoring a double hundred and a century in the same match, Gill became just the ninth player in Test history to accomplish this rare feat.
