During a friendly match in Sri Lanka, a player suddenly collapsed on the field while batting and died instantly, turning an ongoing match into a tragic event. A video of the incident has been circulating on social media. According to reports, the player—an alumnus of a prominent Muslim school in the China Fort area of Beruwala—was participating in a cricket carnival.

The video shows that while he was batting, members of the opposing team were engaged in a heated exchange, suggesting something significant had just occurred. He had stepped just two or three paces out of his crease when he suddenly collapsed. Abandoning the game, all the players rushed towards him, and the match was halted. He was taken to Beruwala Regional Hospital, but he had already passed away by the time he arrived.

Before getting out, he was batting on 6 runs off 3 balls, while his partner was on 1 run off 1 ball. The team's cricket score stood at 37/5 in 3.4 overs. This was a 4-overs-a-side match. This news left everyone stunned; players, organisers, and fans present at the venue were all shocked. Following the incident, the tournament was cancelled indefinitely.

According to reports, it is suspected that Zulfikar suffered a heart attack, although officials have not yet confirmed this. The Beruwala police have launched an investigation and are awaiting the medical report before making an official statement. Tributes are being paid to the cricketer in Beruwala, and people are sharing memories online of the player who had come to enjoy the game with old friends but never returned home.

Such tragic incidents are not new in the history of cricket. The incident involving Australian cricketer Phil Hughes is still considered one of the most tragic moments in the history of cricket—specifically, the moment he was struck on the head by a delivery from Sean Abbott and subsequently passed away. Following this, significant rule changes were introduced in cricket, the most important of which was the concussion rule. Under this rule, if a player is hit on the helmet or head by the ball, a medical team immediately attends to them for an assessment.
