Already out of playoff contention, Sunrisers Hyderabad knocked Lucknow Super Giants out of IPL 2025 with a six-wicket win in Match 61 on Monday at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. On a wicket that offered no movement with the new ball, both teams made a flying start in the powerplay. LSG batted first, and the opening duo of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram once again stitched a brilliant partnership. Both took the aggressive route right from the start and helped their team reach the 100-run mark in nine overs without losing a wicket.

However, SRH fought back in the second half by picking wickets at regular intervals. Mitchell Marsh played a brilliant knock of 65 off 39 balls before departing in the 11th over off debutant Harsh Dubey. The Australian batter would have gotten out early had SRH fielded a bit better and not dropped the crucial catches.

Skipper Rishabh Pant promoted himself and came in at number three. He didn’t try to hit the unorthodox shots that he is known for, but still never looked at ease at the crease. He could score a single boundary before departing for just 7 runs. Pant's misery with the bat continued to frustrate LSG as they failed to capitalize on the consistent starts provided by the openers.

Nonetheless, a pretty good partnership brewed up between Nicholas Pooran and Markram for the third wicket. It looked like the duo would take their team to an imposing total. But a sensational dipping slower ball from Harshal Patel rattled Markram’s stumps. LSG’s scoring rate dipped after the 10th over, and the fall of regular wickets piled further pressure onto them. Nicholas Pooran, though, from one end, kept scoring boundaries at ease but unfortunately got run-out in the final over. He played a brilliant knock of 45 off 26 but found little support from the other end after Markram’s wicket.

Lucknow Super Giants scored 90 runs for seven wickets in the latter half of the innings and ended up posting 205, which wasn’t enough on that wicket. Eshan Malinga was the pick of the bowlers for SRH, claiming 2 for 28 in four overs.

SRH chased down the target with ease in 18.2 overs

Sunrisers Hyderabad lost Atharva Taide (13 off 9) early in the chase, but to their delight, Abhishek Sharma found his groove. The southpaw needed this kind of surface to come back into form, and he made full use of that. He smashed a four and a six to get his innings going, helping SRH get off to a flying start. At the other end, Ishan Kishan also looked at ease and was timing the ball well. He got his innings going with a lofted cover drive off William Rourke for a six, and it was indeed one of the best shots of the game.

Post the powerplay, Abhishek Sharma took Ravi Bishnoi in his arc and smashed him for four consecutive sixes. Courtesy of that onslaught, Sunrisers Hyderabad reached 98 for 1 in just seven overs, and Abhishek Sharma brought up his half-century off just 18 balls.

Lucknow Super Giants needed a wicket at that stage and, once again, it was Digvesh Rathi, who came to their rescue. He bowled a googly wide of off-stump and Sharma took the bait. A mistimed lofted shot led to his dismissal. There were some words exchanged between the two after the dismissal. Abhishek Sharma wasn’t one bit pleased with the send-off given by Digvesh Rathi. Both ended up having a heated argument, and the umpires had to intervene to defuse the situation.

Here's the video clip of the incident:

Strangely, Rishabh Pant didn’t let Digvesh Rathi continue his spell and bowl him another over. He, instead, brought Avesh Khan into the attack when he could have continued with the spinner. Nevertheless, Rathi was brought back after a couple of overs, and he, once again, delivered. Ishan Kishan batted pretty well, and SRH had the upper hand in the chase till the 11th over. But the southpaw decided to play a reverse sweep off Rathi only to miss it completely. Digvesh Rathi took LSG back into the game, but there was no support from the other bowlers.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s middle-order didn’t succumb under pressure this time around as they continued to put on partnerships with ease. Kamindu Mendis joined hands with Heinrich Klaasen and put on a 55-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The duo took the game away from the hosts and, despite Klaasen’s (47 off 28) wicket in the 18th over, SRH chased down the target pretty comfortably in 18.2 overs.
