Sourav Ganguly wants to become Indian head coach? Check details
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has put an end to speculation about his entry into politics, stating clearly that he has no such intentions. Instead, Ganguly expressed a strong interest in returning to the cricketing fold in a coaching capacity, particularly with the Indian national team. Known for his sharp cricketing brain and leadership skills, Ganguly has previously served as Team Director of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with stints from 2018 to 2019 and again from 2022 to 2024.
Reflecting on his journey since retiring from international cricket in 2013, Ganguly highlighted his tenure as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), during which he focused on several key developmental areas, including the promotion and growth of women’s cricket. He played an instrumental role in pushing forward initiatives to improve infrastructure and opportunities for women in the sport.
When asked about the possibility of taking up a coaching role, Ganguly did not rule it out but maintained a cautious approach, stating that time will tell what the future holds. His potential return in a coaching role could bring valuable leadership and strategic insights to the Indian team, as they transition into a new phase under emerging leaders.
“I never really thought about it because I got into different roles. I finished [competitive cricket] in 2013 and then became Board [BCCI] president. We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50 [53], so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it. We’ll see where it goes,” stated former India captain Sourav Ganguly.
Sourav Ganguly has once again made it clear that he has no intentions of entering politics, firmly stating that even if he were offered a high-profile role such as a state Chief Minister, he would not be interested. The former Indian captain emphasized that his focus remains firmly rooted in cricket and contributing to the sport in meaningful ways. Ganguly, known for his forthrightness, has consistently distanced himself from political affiliations despite repeated speculation linking him to various political parties over the years.
In the same conversation, the Indian cricketing legend heaped praise on current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, acknowledging the tremendous growth he has shown in his coaching journey. Ganguly pointed out that Gambhir’s leadership and strategic vision played a crucial role in India’s victorious campaign in the 2025 Champions Trophy held in Dubai. He highlighted how Gambhir has transitioned smoothly from a fiery, on-field competitor to a composed and intelligent leader in the dressing room. According to Ganguly, Gambhir’s ability to instill belief and clarity in his players has already begun to show results, and his tactical awareness is something that the young Indian team can greatly benefit from. Ganguly expressed confidence in Gambhir’s potential to take Indian cricket forward in the coming years.
“Gautam [Gambhir] is doing a good job. He started off a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand, but he picked up with the Champions Trophy. This is going to be a big series [vs England],” Ganguly added.
