Shubman Gill, the newly appointed Test captain of the Indian team, is enjoying a dream run with the bat during the ongoing 2025 India Tour of England. Widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in world cricket, Gill has truly come into his own on this tour, amassing an astonishing 585 runs in just four innings. His run tally includes a magnificent double century and two commanding centuries, taking his batting average to a staggering 146.25. Before this series, doubts loomed over Gill's ability to perform in English conditions, as he had managed only 88 runs in seven Test innings in the country.

All about Shubman Gill - Prince of Indian cricket

However, the stylish right-hander has turned his form around spectacularly, silencing critics with one match-winning performance after another. His sensational cricket score of 269 runs not only anchored India's innings but also marked a turning point in his Test career. The innings earned praise from fans, former cricketers, and experts alike, many of whom have now declared Shubman Gill as the Prince of Indian cricket.

Shubman Gill has often shown a tendency to shine in the second innings of Test matches, but on this England tour, he appears to have turned a corner. While his talent, stroke play, and solid technique were never in doubt, fans and experts alike were concerned that he wasn’t converting his promising starts into big scores. Despite looking composed at the crease with near-perfect timing and mental clarity, Gill himself admitted that the weight of expectations may have affected his ability to build long innings in the past. Now, having addressed that pressure, he is finally delivering the kind of consistent, match-defining knocks expected of him.

Currently, Gill has cemented his place across all three formats for India. He is not only leading the Test side but also serves as the vice-captain of the ODI team. In the Indian Premier League, he captains the Gujarat Titans, further showcasing his growing stature as a leader. On the Test front, he recently smashed a double century, pushing his tally to 2,478 runs, which includes eight hundreds and seven fifties. Dubbed the "Prince of Indian Cricket," Gill seems to be entering the prime of his career, and his evolution into a dependable run-machine is thrilling for Indian fans.

Shubman Gill has already built an impressive resume across formats. In ODIs, he has scored 2,775 runs, including seven centuries and eight fifties, with a standout knock of 208 against New Zealand in 2023, placing him among the few Indians to score a double hundred in the format. In T20Is, Gill has tallied 578 runs with three fifties and a century—his highest being an explosive 126, also against New Zealand in 2023. He joins the elite club of Indian batters, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Suresh Raina, who have scored centuries in all three formats.

In the IPL, Gill has amassed 3,866 runs, including four hundreds and 26 fifties. His 890 runs in IPL 2023 make him the second-highest run-getter in a single season, only behind Virat Kohli’s 973 in 2016. With growing comparisons to Kohli, Gill is being hailed as India’s next batting great.

Shubman Gill’s current form has captured the attention of cricketing legends worldwide. New Zealand star Kane Williamson has even labelled Gill, the “Prince of Cricket,” as the future face of a new “Fab Four” in world cricket. Gill’s dominance with the bat has not only elevated fan confidence but also drawn comparisons with greats like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. His majestic 269-run knock in the ongoing series has further justified these comparisons.

During that innings, Gill shattered several major records, including registering the highest individual Test score by an Indian batter in SENA countries. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s iconic 241* against Australia at Sydney in 2003. Gill also forged a remarkable 203-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, helping India post a commanding total. As expectations around him continue to soar, the big question now is whether Shubman Gill can truly ascend from the “Prince” to the undisputed “King” of Indian cricket.
