Following a shocking 30-run defeat against the reigning world test champions, South Africa, in the first test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Indian side will be hoping to make a bounce-back in the second test, which is set to begin on November 22 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.

The Indian team is likely to enter this match without their regular test skipper, Shubman Gill, who is currently suffering from a severe neck injury sustained during day 1 of the first test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

He went into the middle after India’s 2nd wicket fell. However, after facing 2 balls, he played a sweep shot off Simon Harmer for a boundary. At this precise moment, he was looking in pain in his neck. After this, Physio came out into the middle to assign him. Then, he walked away to the Pavilion and later to the Hospital for the scans.

Medical reports suggest that he sustained a neck spasm. Shubman Gill is currently stable, and the medical and physio team will take a call on his participation for the second test. However, some reports suggest that Shubman Gill is likely to miss the second test, and vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead the side.

In his absence, Sai Sudharsan could be included in the playing XI. While the rest of the India playing XI will be the same.

At the first test, the Indian batting order collapsed like a pack of cards in both innings. Despite this, the Indian team will field the same XI, except for Shubman Gill. Bowlers did a nice job in both innings, but batters failed. The Indian team didn’t chase down the 124-run target in the second innings and was bowled out on just 93 runs. So now, batters will have to take more responsibility for denying another home test series defeat at home.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul once again will do the opening. However, the real concerns emerge shortly afterwards. Who should bat at 3, 4 & 5? If Sai Sudharsan is included, he will come to bat at his regular No. 3. Rishabh Pant, as captain, will lead from the front and slot himself in at number four. Following this, India’s trio of all-rounders, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel, along with wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel, will bat at five, six, seven, and eight. Kuldeep Yadav, the frontline spinner, will come in at 9. The two pacers will be Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
