The men in blue have finally ended their wait for their first victory of the ongoing UK tour. On the 19th day of the tour, after getting 6 consecutive defeats in the shortest format, India’s ODI side registered the tour’s first victory. Indian team defeated England by 6 wickets at Edgbaston, Birmingham, in the first ODI of the 3-match series. However, the team got 2 major injury concerns during the match.

First, with Shubman Gill, the skipper, who was seen in discomfort when he was playing on 80. He even walked off the field. Second, with Gurnoor Brar, who came on to bowl in the 48th over of the innings, faced difficulty running, prompting Axar Patel to deliver the over while he was taken off the field for further treatment. Gurnoor’s figures were 9 overs, 61 runs, and 2 wickets. He dismissed both England openers, Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett.

Reports suggest that both injured players are fine and both are available for the IND vs ENG 2nd ODI match, scheduled for Sophie Gardens, Cardiff on July 16. However, if Gill misses the match, Ishan Kishan will open the innings with veteran Rohit Sharma. While, Shreyas Iyer will lead the side. On the other hand, Brar not making the cut could open the doors for either Arshdeep Singh or Prince Yadav.

As per match context, England were bowled out for 258 runs after batting first. Joe Root was the highest run-getter for the 3-lions side, scoring 76 runs. He remained not out till the end. While Liam Dawson scored 68 runs. For India, Axar Patel took the highest 4 wickets, while Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna picked 2 wickets each. Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube also took 1 wicket each.

In response, India got a poor start. Indian fans were stunned when Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were dismissed cheaply. Rohit scored 11 runs, while Virat was dismissed on 5. However, from here, Shubman Gill scored 80 runs. Unfortunately, he went back to the pavilion after being retired hurt due to injury. Just then, England suddenly tried to make a comeback in the game by taking two quick wickets.

However, from that point on, Washington Sundar (52*) and Axar Patel (57*) did not allow India to suffer any further setbacks; they stitched together a 102-run partnership and steered Team India to victory.
