Shubman Gill reveals the ultimate goal of winning the World Cup 2027
Amidst the Indian team's consecutive ICC tournament wins, India's ODI and Test captain, Shubman Gill, has also admitted that winning the 2027 World Cup is his ultimate goal.
The Indian team came very close to winning the World Cup 2023, reaching the final after remaining undefeated throughout the tournament, but Australia broke the hearts of 140 crore Indian fans by defeating the hosts by 6 wickets in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
The next edition of the ODI World Cup will be held in October-November 2027, hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. A total of 14 teams will participate in this tournament.
The Indian team won their maiden ODI World Cup in 1983 under Kapil Dev’s leadership, which transformed cricket's popularity in the country. Following this, under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, the Indian team successfully broke the 28-year drought and lifted the ODI World Cup in 2011. All of India's cricket teams (Senior Men's, Women's, and Under-19 Men's and Women's) were present at the recently held BCCI Awards Show, where they were honoured with awards. Shubman Gill was also present there. Gill received the Best Cricketer of the Year 2025 award. During the ceremony, Gill stated that his ultimate goal is to win the 2027 World Cup.
"Definitely, it does. That is the ultimate goal. We felt like we were so close last time when we were here in [the final] in India. Getting another crack at it in South Africa is going to be a great opportunity for us. Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal. So obviously, that is something that sometimes runs in my mind,” said Gill.
India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also appeared at the awards show with his entire World Cup-winning team. He also said that if he gets the opportunity, he would like to play and win the 2023 World Cup final once again. Recently, under his captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup 2026 title at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the same venue where India lost the ODI World Cup 2023 final.
Suryakumar Yadav admitted that the 2024 T20 World Cup win has played a major role in the success of various Indian teams, including the women's and under-19 teams, in securing multiple ICC trophies over the past couple of years.
"Definitely, the 2023 World Cup final at Ahmedabad. [I would] love to replay that and win it. I think we just needed that one spark, or one step, which we actually crossed in 2024, and post that, 2025 Champions Trophy, then [the] women's team winning that ODI World Cup back in 2025, and then [men winning in] 2026. That one step was important, that taste was important for everyone to understand what it takes to win an ICC trophy. Now, there is no looking back. If this wonderful thing has started, let's try and collect as many [trophies] as possible,” said Suryakumar.
