Shubman Gill breaks his silence on Rohit Sharma’s retirement speculation

Rohit Sharma silenced rumours of his retirement by smashing a memorable century in the third ODI against England at Lord's. A player boasting a record that includes 33 ODI centuries, three ODI double centuries, the record for the most centuries (five) in a single World Cup, and the feat of scoring over 500 runs in consecutive World Cups, he continues to answer questions about his performance—amidst a toxic atmosphere—as he aims to play in the 2027 World Cup.

India Captain & Rohit’s opening partner, Shubman Gill, also stated in the post-match press conference that Rohit had not mentioned retirement at all, and that the talk was merely a rumour spread by the media.

“Rohit bhai has not told us anything about it being his last game. It is all out in the media only."

Gill also indicated Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s contribution to the development of Indian cricket over the years. 

"I mean, they have done really well over the years in different parts of the world. And very, very pleased with how Rohit Bhai batted today, especially getting 140. And I think the wicket got a little bit slow in the end. It wasn't easy to score those runs. But I think the way he batted was really a treat to watch."

In the 3rd ODI between India and England at Lord's, after being elected to bat first, England scored 387/3, thanks to Ben Duckett’s incredible ton. He scored 141 runs in 135 balls, including 18 fours and 1 six. He made a 192-run opening stand with his partner Jacob Bethell, who missed his ton by just 9 runs. After this, Joe Root also played an unbeaten 74-run knock in 60 balls. He remained not out throughout the series. After this, Jos Buttler’s incredible hitting in the death overs helped England to score a massive total. For India, in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, India’s bowling attack was looking completly inexperience. Prasidh Krishna took 2 wickets, while Prince Yadav picked 1 wicket. Gurnoor Brar was the most expensive bowler of the day, who conceded 97 runs in 10 overs without taking any wickets. 

In reply, for India, Rohit Sharma scored 138 runs in 110 balls, including 17 fours and 5 sixes. Rohit and skipper Shubman Gill (77) added 147 runs for the first wicket. Following this, fans witnessed another ROKO show. The legendary duo added 113 runs partnership for the second wicket. Rohit was dismissed by Jacob Bethell, while Kohli scored 74 runs. After Rohit’s dismissal, England were back in the game. They took wickets at regular intervals and restricted the men in blue to 360/7.
