"Shubman beta, well played": Gill’s parents congratulate him on double century
India’s Test captain Shubman Gill brought immense joy to India after he smashed a double-century against England in the second Test of the ongoing five-match series on Thursday. Before the start of the tournament, there were doubts over Gill’s ability to perform in red ball cricket in English conditions. But his recent performances in the first two Tests have left everyone in awe.
He began the Test series with a scintillating 147 in the first Test and followed it up with a double-century in Birmingham. Gill showed remarkable focus as he surpassed Sunil Gavaskar to record the highest-ever individual Test score by an Indian batter in England. He recorded a mammoth 269 off 387 balls, a knock which was laced with 30 fours and three sixes.
His compatriots Yashasvi Jaiswal (87), Ravindra Jadeja (89), and Washington Sundar (42) also made vital contributions as India piled up a mammoth score of 587 on the board. Following an epic knock from Shubman Gill, the Board of Control for Cricket in India created a video montage, which featured his parents' congratulatory messages, Shubman coming to the hotel with great reception and him giving an autograph to a kid.
In the video clip, Gill also revealed how he spent the night after playing a historical knock.
"I went to the pool for some recovery, came back, showered. I was having dinner and you guys stopped me in the middle to record this." Gill said.
"Once I’m done with my routine, that’s when I check my phone before bed - mainly to speak to my family and close friends." He added.
Later in the video, his parents cheered Gill with great applause.
"Shubman beta, well played. Aaj teri batting dekhke bahut maza aaya. Aur dil mein bahut sukoon mila...bahut hi proud feel hua," his father said.
"Bahut acha laga tumhari batting dekhkar. Keep going, God bless you." said his mother.
After posting a mammoth score on the board, India managed to pick up three wickets at Stumps on Day 2. England have scored 77 with Joe Root (1) and Harry Brook (30) unbeaten at the crease.
