Shreyas Iyer back in the T20I reckoning for Asia Cup 2025
With the conclusion of the thrilling India vs England Test series, the focus has now shifted to the shorter format. The next stop for Team India is the UAE, as the side gears up for the Asia Cup 2025. Meanwhile, the latest developments suggest that the management is keen on recalling Shreyas Iyer back into the fray. Earlier in 2024, the Mumbai player lost his central contract with the BCCI as he failed to adhere to the board's mandates on playing domestic cricket. However, Iyer has been on a roll across formats, winning the IPL 2024 title as KKR captain and returning to Mumbai in the domestic season, where the team went on to win the Irani Cup and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
BCCI ready to call Shreyas Iyer back in the T20I and Test fray
While the star player has earned his central contract back, Iyer is still waiting for a return to the Indian camp for T20Is and the Test format. The Mumbai prodigy joined the India squad for the ODI series against England at home before going to Dubai for the all-important ICC Champions Trophy. As India won the ICC trophy, Iyer emerged as one of the top performers in the tournament. Moreover, Iyer further demanded attention to his game, leading Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in over a decade in IPL 2025.
Despite spots being open in the India Test squad after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Iyer did not get a call-up for the India vs England series. At the time of the squad announcement, the BCCI selection chief simply rued a lack of spot for the in-form player. However, Iyer's purple form, as witnessed across formats and tournaments for over a year now, has compelled the board to look at him as an all-format prospect.
According to the latest reports, Shreyas Iyer is likely to be called into the India T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025. As Suryakumar Yadav targets the upcoming ACC tournament for his return after surgery, Iyer is being looked upon as a reliable middle-order pick. Moreover, with his excellent skills on spin-friendly tracks, Iyer is also set to walk into the Test setup for the upcoming home season, where India gets ready to host West Indies and South Africa.
“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy," a BCCI source spilled to a leading daily. "The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests, two each against West Indies and South Africa," he added.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai captain has been named in the West Zone squad for the upcoming edition of the Duleep Trophy. Pace all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been named as the captain of the side, while veterans like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have missed out on a spot. Meanwhile, India's Test captain, Shubman Gill, has been named as the captain of North Zone for the domestic tournament.
