Shikhar Dhawan recently offered a thoughtful perspective on the roles of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the lead-up to the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. He emphasized that despite being seasoned players, both Rohit and Kohli continue to bring exceptional value to the Indian side. According to Dhawan, their vast experience and proven leadership abilities make them invaluable assets, particularly in high-pressure global tournaments where composure and decision-making often determine outcomes. He further highlighted that players of their caliber possess an innate understanding of match situations, which becomes crucial during knockout stages and tense moments. Their presence in the squad not only strengthens the batting lineup but also provides guidance and stability to younger players.

However, Dhawan also acknowledged the concerns surrounding their preparation for the upcoming World Cup. Both Rohit and Kohli stepped away from Test cricket in May last year, and with the current international calendar featuring fewer One Day Internationals, questions have been raised about maintaining rhythm and peak fitness. Limited match exposure could potentially impact consistency and readiness, making workload management and strategic planning essential as India builds toward the 2027 tournament.

By the time the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 is held across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, Rohit Sharma will be 40 years old, while Virat Kohli will be 38. While such numbers often spark debates about longevity and physical demands in modern cricket, Shikhar Dhawan believes age should not be a major concern in this case. Dhawan emphasized that both players have consistently demonstrated exceptional fitness standards and a deep understanding of the game. He pointed out that experience becomes a decisive factor in global tournaments, where handling pressure and reading match situations are critical. According to him, Rohit and Kohli’s presence goes beyond individual performance - they bring stability, leadership, and confidence to the squad. Their ability to guide younger players and deliver in crucial moments makes them indispensable assets, regardless of age.

"Of course they can, and they should play. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both are experienced, and you need experience going into the ODI WC, which is only a year away," stated former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Following India’s successful run in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the team management initiated a gradual leadership transition aimed at preparing for the future. As part of this shift, Shubman Gill was appointed as the new ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma. This move naturally sparked discussions about the long-term roles of senior players, particularly Rohit and Virat Kohli, with some speculation suggesting they could be phased out ahead of the 2027 World Cup cycle.

However, both Rohit and Kohli have made their intentions clear. Despite stepping away from Test cricket and T20 Internationals, the two veterans remain fully committed to the ODI format and have set their sights firmly on the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. Their focus on 50-over cricket has allowed them to manage workload effectively while maintaining peak performance levels. Importantly, both players have continued to deliver consistent performances in ODIs, reinforcing their value to the team. Their experience, combined with sustained form, positions them as key contributors even as India balances transition with continuity in the lead-up to the next global tournament.

Virat Kohli delivered a remarkable performance during the ODI series against New Zealand national cricket team in January, silencing doubts around his form and longevity. He amassed 240 runs across three matches, averaging an impressive 80 while maintaining a strike rate above 105. His consistency throughout the series highlighted not only his technical excellence but also his ability to adapt and dominate in modern one-day cricket. Kohli’s performances once again reinforced his status as a dependable pillar in India’s batting lineup, especially in high-stakes scenarios.

In contrast, Rohit Sharma experienced a slight dip in form during the same series. After delivering strong performances against Australia national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team, expectations were high. However, in the three-match contest against New Zealand, Rohit managed an average of 20.33, indicating a temporary decline in output. While the numbers reflected a brief inconsistency, such phases are not uncommon in a long career, and his overall track record suggests the ability to bounce back strongly.
