Shardul Thakur opens up on the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma

Shardul Thakur recently shared his thoughts on the retirements of two of India’s most iconic cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, from Test cricket. Rohit officially announced his retirement from the longest format on May 7, followed by Kohli on May 12, marking the end of an era for Indian Test cricket. According to Thakur, the two legends may have made the decision knowing that they could no longer contribute or drive the format with the same intensity and consistency as before. Thakur acknowledged the massive void their absence will create, not just in terms of runs and experience, but also in the sense of security their presence provided to the rest of the team. He mentioned that when senior players like Rohit and Kohli are part of the lineup, it naturally offers a layer of protection and confidence to the younger players in the squad.

What was the reason behind Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirements?

Now back in India’s Test setup for the upcoming five-match series, Thakur emphasized the importance of balancing youth and experience. He noted that a team that strikes the right mix between promising youngsters and seasoned players often produces the best results. While the departures of Rohit and Kohli leave big shoes to fill, Thakur believes this transition could also be a great opportunity for the next generation of Indian cricketers to step up and make their mark in red-ball cricket. The focus now shifts to building a new core capable of carrying the legacy forward into the next phase of Indian Test cricket.

“They are the most senior figures in the game, but such decisions are personal. It comes when they feel they can’t contribute or drive the format as before,” said India's seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur. 

“There is a great deal of protection when senior players are around, and having a good mix of senior and junior players in the team provides flourishing results,” he added.

Shardul Thakur believes that with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from Test cricket, the responsibility on senior players like Ravindra Jadeja will increase significantly. As the most experienced member of the current Indian Test squad, Jadeja's presence will be crucial both on and off the field. Thakur highlighted that Jadeja’s all-round abilities and calm temperament will be key in guiding the younger players and maintaining balance within the team.

According to Thakur, Jadeja now assumes a vital leadership role, not just through his performances but also in helping the new captain and emerging players adapt to the challenges of Test cricket, especially during high-pressure tours like the upcoming one to England. He added that this series will serve as a true test for everyone — from the fresh faces in the squad to the newly appointed leaders. Thakur also stressed the importance of stepping up during this transitional phase for Indian cricket. With two giants of the game having exited the format, the expectations are high, and consistency from experienced campaigners like Jadeja will be vital. As India begins its World Test Championship 2025–2027 cycle, Thakur believes that collective effort and strong individual performances will be key to continued success.

"Jaddu is now the most experienced. This tour will test everyone, with new responsibilities, including leadership roles. It’s a fresh challenge, but we have the talent. Young players must seize this opportunity to build their own legacy,” Shardul noted. 

Shardul Thakur has pointed out that the biggest challenge awaiting Team India on their upcoming tour of England will be the unpredictable weather conditions. Known for frequent rain interruptions and sudden changes in climate, the English summer often presents difficulties for visiting teams, particularly in maintaining rhythm and adapting to varying pitch and atmospheric conditions.

Thakur emphasized that these factors can significantly influence swing and seam movement, making it tougher for batters and demanding more discipline from bowlers. With overcast skies and moisture-laden pitches, adapting quickly will be crucial for success in the five-match series. The Indian squad is scheduled to depart for England on June 6 to begin preparations well in advance. The highly anticipated Test series kicks off with the first match at Headingley in Leeds, starting on June 20.
