Sandeep Patil comes up with a huge revelation about MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh formed one of the most memorable partnerships in Indian cricket, delivering numerous match-winning performances for the Indian team. Their understanding in the middle and ability to absorb pressure often helped India turn difficult situations into victories. Whether in crucial run chases or high-stakes tournaments, the duo’s partnerships were instrumental in shaping many unforgettable moments for Indian fans. However, after both players stepped away from international cricket, discussions around their relationship began to change.
MS Dhoni never asked to drop Yuvraj Singh: Sandeep Patil
Yuvraj’s father, Yograj Singh, publicly criticised Dhoni on several occasions, claiming that the former captain played a role in Yuvraj’s exclusion from the national team in the later stages of his career. These remarks sparked considerable debate within the cricketing community and among fans, leading to a wave of reactions across media platforms. The controversy gradually overshadowed the camaraderie and achievements that Dhoni and Yuvraj had shared during their playing days. Despite their immense contributions to Indian cricket, the public narrative surrounding the duo began to focus more on the perceived rift rather than their remarkable on-field partnership.
“Not once — not during selection meetings, not on tour, not during matches — did Mahendra Singh Dhoni say drop Yuvraj Singh. I am going on the record," stated former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil.
“He had total confidence in the selection committee. He didn’t say anything,” he added.
Sandeep Patil, a former India international who also served as the chief selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India for four years, addressed the controversy by firmly clarifying that MS Dhoni had no role in the exclusion of Yuvraj Singh from the national team. Patil emphasized that selection decisions are made collectively by the selection committee and are based on team balance, performance, and future planning rather than the preference of any individual player or captain.
Despite this clarification, Yuvraj’s father, Yograj Singh, has repeatedly voiced his dissatisfaction over the years. In multiple interviews, he has openly criticized Dhoni and questioned the circumstances surrounding his son’s exit from the Indian side. In a recent appearance on the Switch YouTube channel, Yograj once again expressed strong resentment toward Dhoni. During the conversation, he blamed the former Indian captain for Yuvraj’s exclusion and described the situation as deeply unfair. Yograj went further by publicly questioning Dhoni’s influence in the decision-making process, insisting that the actions taken against his son were difficult for him to accept.
"I won't forgive MS Dhoni. He should look at himself in the mirror. He is a very prominent cricketer, I salute him. But what he did to my son is unforgivable. Everything is coming to light now, and it can never be forgiven," stated Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj Singh.
Sandeep Patil also addressed the repeated criticism coming from Yograj Singh, offering a balanced perspective on the issue. Patil acknowledged that a father’s emotions can often run deep when it comes to his son’s career, especially when that son is someone like Yuvraj Singh, who has contributed immensely to Indian cricket. However, he suggested that the frustration seemed to be directed at the wrong person.
According to Patil, decisions regarding team selection are never made by a single player or even the captain alone. Instead, they are taken collectively by the selectors after evaluating performance, team balance, and long-term plans. By highlighting this process, Patil indicated that blaming MS Dhoni for Yuvraj’s absence from the national team was misplaced, even though Yograj’s emotional reaction as a father was understandable.
“A father feeling strongly about his son is not wrong. But the blame is being placed in the wrong place," Patil concluded.
