SA vs AFG: Massive heartbreak for Afghanistan in a historic T20 WC double Super Over thriller
South Africa defeated Afghanistan in a thrilling double super over match at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. With this, they registered their second consecutive victory in the group stage of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Afghanistan won the toss & opted to bowl first. South Africa put up a mammoth total of 187/6 after batting first.
In response, Afghanistan struggled to reach 174 runs with the loss of 9 wickets in 19 overs. It seemed that the African team would win the match from here. But Kagiso Rabada was not in his element in the last over. He dismissed Noor on the first ball of the over, but that ball was a no-ball. After that, Noor also hit a four against him. Rabada even bowled another no-ball, which made it seem that Afghanistan would win the match.
But in the end, due to Fazalhaq Farooqi's slow running between the wickets, the match was tied. After this, the match reached the super over, where Afghanistan, batting first, scored 17 runs, in response to which South Africa also scored 17 runs, and the match reached the second super over.
In the second super over, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs added 23 runs by hitting 3 sixes. In reply to this, Afghanistan lost the wicket of Mohammad Nabi (0 off 2) on the second ball. But Rahmanullah Gurbaz made the match interesting by hitting 3 consecutive sixes. The next ball was wide, and the equation changed from 6 off 1 to 5 off 1. Unfortunately, he was caught out on the last ball, and Afghanistan lost the second super over by 4 runs.

This is Afghanistan’s second defeat of the tournament. They lost their opening match against New Zealand. And from here, they have almost been eliminated from the tournament. Now, only a miracle can take Afghanistan to the next round—Super 8. They will play their next cricket match against the United Arab Emirates on February 16 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. On the other hand, South Africa will face New Zealand on February 14 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Earlier, for South Africa, Ryan Rickelton (61) and Quinton de Kock (59) scored half-centuries and took their team to a massive score. For Afghanistan, Azmatullah Omarzai took 3 wickets and Rashid Khan 2 wickets. While chasing 188, Rahmanullah Gurbaz became the sole survivor. He scored 84 runs in just 42 balls. Afghanistan was fighting as long as Gurbaz was playing. But wickets were falling steadily from the other side. In the end, Rashid Khan's 20 and Noor Ahmed's 15 made crucial contributions to tie the match. For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi took the maximum number of wickets with 3, for which he also received the Player of the Match award.
