Rohit Sharma’s ultimate dream of winning the ODI World Cup 2027 still alive
Cricket fans across the world are currently enthralled by the prospect of the T20 World Cup 2026. Hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the World Cup is witnessing increasingly competitive matches every day, and it's still difficult to predict which team will lift the World Cup title this time. India’s veteran batter, Rohit Sharma, is the brand ambassador of this tournament. Under his captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and also the Champions Trophy in 2025. However, his biggest goal is still unfulfilled—to win the ODI World Cup trophy.
Recently, in an ICC event, he disclosed his dream once again. He made it very clear that he not only reaffirmed his intention to participate in the next 50-over World Cup but also stated that he is committed to winning the trophy, and for this, he will do everything he can.
"I definitely want to go out there and win the World Cup for my country; that is something that I've always looked upon. I've grown up watching this 50-over World Cup. There was no T20 World Cup or IPL back then, and that was the pinnacle of cricket, which used to happen every four years. So, there was desperation; there was so much weight for that one trophy. And yeah, I really want that trophy, so I'm going to try and do everything in my power and capacity to work hard and get it," Rohit said.
Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli, has retired from T20Is and the Test format and is only playing in ODIs. He was also removed from ODI captaincy. It was initially believed that Rohit and Virat would retire from ODI cricket during the Australia tour, but both have made it clear that they do not want to leave the ODI format and want to play the 2027 World Cup. Both have even put in excellent performances with the bat. After the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli played 9 ODIs, where he scored 409 runs with an average of 51.12, including a century and 3 half-centuries. However, Rohit could not contribute much in his last series, and he could score only 61 runs in 3 matches against New Zealand. On the other hand, Virat Kohli scored 616 in 9 innings at an average of 88, including 3 centuries and 3 half-centuries.
To demonstrate their dedication, both also participated in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring centuries in their first games. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s next appearance in international cricket will come in July, when India will tour England for 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is. Before this, both will also feature in IPL 2026.
