It was about time that Mumbai celebrated the hero Rohit Sharma, the homeboy, has become in Indian cricket. The captain who led India to two ICC trophies was felicitated at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. The MCA inaugurated the 'Rohit Sharma Stand' at the venue, honoring the 'Mumbai Cha Raja'. The 38-year-old Indian ODI skipper was present at the event as three more stands were inaugurated at the ground. Rohit Sharma, who also led Mumbai Indians to a record five IPL titles, joined the ceremony ahead of MI kicking off the next phase following the resumption of IPL 2025. The former skipper received thunderous cheers from fans, with MI owner Aakash Ambani hailing the player in a social media post shared by the franchise.

The MCA, on Friday, May 16, inaugurated four stands at the Wankhede Stadium, honoring Rohit Sharma, Sharad Pawar, and Ajit Wadekar for their contributions to the sport. Mumbai has witnessed the heroic journey of Rohit Sharma in cricket. From humble beginnings to being hailed as 'Mumbai Cha Raja', the city has supported and nurtured Rohit's dreams. Upon his return from the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, the first ICC trophy India won under his captaincy, Wankhede hosted thousands of fans celebrating the team.

Rohit Sharma has now earned a place among cricketing greats with a stand named after him at Wankhede. This honor puts him in the esteemed company of icons like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Vijay Merchantm all of whom have stands at the iconic venue. Rohit's captaincy has seen India clinch two major titles, the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025.

Representing Mumbai, he has turned out in 46 first-class matches, 17 List A games, and 25 T20s. As a tribute to his contributions, the Divecha Pavilion Level 3 section has officially been renamed the Rohit Sharma Stand. Additionally, other sections at the stadium have been renamed to honor cricketing and administrative stalwarts, Grand Stand Level 3 now carries the name of former BCCI president Sharad Pawar, while Grand Stand Level 4 is dedicated to Ajit Wadekar, a former captain of the Indian team.
