Former Indian captain and veteran opener Rohit Sharma could play their last international match against England on Sunday at Lord’s, London. According to reports, a week before the England series, the BCCI Selectors made it clear that the England ODI series would be Rohit Sharma's last, as the management was no longer considering him in the World Cup 2027 Scheme of Things. In the media world, this news has spread all around on this side, and there is a sensation everywhere.

There was speculation for a long time whether Rohit Sharma would play in the 2027 World Cup. According to reports, Rohit Sharma also spoke to senior BCCI officials, and it has also been made clear that management is not considering Rohit after the England series.

"Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour, and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness, the selectors have left the ball in Sharma's court to decide his future," the report quoted

During the second ODI between England and India, there was constant discussion on Rohit's retirement in the Hindi and English commentary panel boxes, which clearly indicates that Rohit will play his last ODI at Lord's.

He was removed from the captaincy despite India winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025 under his captaincy. For the last year, he was playing in the team as a batsman and was seen under a lot of pressure. In the series against Australia last year, he emerged as the Player of the Series, after which he was also seen in the open batting role, which started speculation that Rohit Sharma has now become a part of the Scheme of things for the World Cup 2027. But after that, Rohit's performance remained ordinary. He definitely scored a few half-centuries, but Yashasvi Jaiswal caught everyone's attention with his performance, who strongly presented his claim in the ODI team by scoring 2 centuries in the last 3 innings.

"The national selectors are keen that Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored two hundreds in three innings, gets a longer rope. There are around 20 games, and Jaiswal needs to be given those 20 games. No one can tell Rohit to retire, but it is very clear that, going forward, for the home series vs West Indies in September, the selectors would like to look ahead. Rohit's future is a decision that he needs to take," a senior BCCI source privy to selection matters told.

Rohit has appeared to be under considerable pressure in this series so far; his shot selection and execution have seemed somewhat tentative. However, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak clarified in the post-match press conference that Rohit is not under any kind of pressure. Even though he hasn't performed well in the first two matches, he could deliver a strong performance in the third ODI.

“See, I don't think a big player like Rohit Sharma can have any sort of pressure. He's too good a player to feel that. Yes, he didn't get runs in the opening two matches, but I don't think that makes any difference. But today, it also looked like he'd probably get a good inning out. But that's okay,” Kotak said.

The biggest dream of Rohit Sharma's career is to win the ODI World Cup, but perhaps his dream as a player can never be fulfilled. It will be interesting to see whether he will really announce his retirement at Lord's or whether he still fights for his place. There are still 15–16 months left for the World Cup to start, and India have to play ODI series against West Indies, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe in the meantime, where perhaps Yashasvi Jaiswal might be given a chance instead of him.
