The BCCI administration is set to undergo yet another significant transition. Roger Binny, the current BCCI president, has reportedly vacated the spot. The former Indian cricketer recently turned 70 and has exited the scene, as required by the apex board's rulebook. Meanwhile, Rajeev Shukla, a long-time associate with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is set to claim the top administration spot. However, the latest report has specified that Shukla's role as the board's president will be in an interim capacity until the BCCI finds Binny's replacement.

Rajeev Shukla set to take over as the interim President of BCCI

Roger Binny, who succeeded Sourav Ganguly as the BCCI President in October 2022, recently turned 70. The age of 70 is set as the upper limit permitted for any office-bearer under the BCCI constitution. Meanwhile, reports have indicated that Binny's exit has cleared the way for Rajeev Shukla. Shukla, the current vice-president of BCCI, has been part of the administration since 2020. The 65-year-old is now set to oversee operations until the Annual General Meeting scheduled for September. It is at this AGM that member units are expected to finalise the name of the next full-time president through consensus.

There had been speculation, based on an earlier report, that Binny might be allowed to continue until the next meeting, especially in light of the newly passed National Sports Bill. The Bill extends the retirement age for sports administrators to 75, provided the sport’s international federation imposes no stricter limits. However, since the BCCI constitution explicitly caps the age at 70, Binny’s tenure came to a close despite the broader amendment.

“The national sports bill has just been passed, so, we have some time to study it and engage in proper discussion before taking any decision,” another BCCI source said.

The board’s legal team is currently examining the new legislation, but until any changes are formally adopted, the existing rules remain in force. With cricket set to return to the Olympics in 2028, the BCCI faces crucial decisions on governance and long-term planning. In the meantime, Rajeev Shukla, a veteran administrator and former member of the IPL governing council, will be responsible for steering the board through this transition phase.
