RCB vs CSK IPL 2025: All about the Dewald Brevis controversial dismissal

It was arguably one of the most heated matches in the ongoing IPL season as CSK rounded off against RCB at their den. The tussle between a team already out of playoff contention and another vying for a Top 2 finish would not be termed a 'high-stakes' encounter. However, a fierce rivalry charged the RCB vs CSK IPL 2025 match as one of the most-awaited events. The fixture justified the hype as the teams challenged each other to their last breaths in the high-scoring thriller. While Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the match by 2 runs at the Chinnaswamy, the Dewald Brevis dismissal has been placed at the center of discussion.

Did the Dewald Brevis dismissal cost the victory to Chennai Super Kings in the RCB vs CSK IPL 2025 match?

Romario Shepherd played a blazing innings, knocking a 14-ball half-century to mount a 214-run chase for CSK. Already a par 200-run total, CSK was counted out of contention until the young Ayush Mhatre stood up. Despite the crumbling of the top order around him, the 17-year-old stood tall, bringing in the runs at a healthy strike rate. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja showed up just at the right time, supporting the young gun from the other end. Both batters hit their respective half-centuries to stitch a 114-run partnership.

RCB finally got a breakthrough as Ayush Mhatre departed at 94, nearly missing his century as a shot off Lungi Ngidi landed in the hands of Krunal Pandya. With Dewald Brevis next in the lineup and Ravindra Jadeja already set at the crease, CSK were still the favorites for the win. However, a series of chaotic events followed as the momentum shifted entirely towards RCB. Lungi Ngidi trapped Dewald Brevis in an LBW dismissal right on the next delivery.

The umpire didn’t consider much before raising his finger despite the ball’s trajectory going down the leg side. However, the batters didn’t seem to catch the signal as they continued to run between the stumps. All this while, there was no timer on the screens to gauge the time left for Brevis to review the decision. When Dewald Brevis finally signaled to ask for the review, the umpire denied it. Ravindra Jadeja approached the umpire, but the time had elapsed, without any timer in sight. RCB players surrounded the discussion as Brevis eventually had to walk off for a golden duck.

In a scene that would haunt CSK fans for days to come, a replay showed that the Dewald Brevis dismissal was judged wrong by the on-field umpire. The ball was clearly missing the stumps, as suggested by its down-the-leg-side trajectory. However, Nitin Menon had already sent back Brevis, so there was nothing left to do. CSK, in turn, could not chase 15 off the last over despite MS Dhoni being at the crease and Yash Dayal bowling a no-ball. The no-ball also needed to be reviewed as the on-field umpires, this time, were not too sure of the ball’s position, unlike the time they swiftly confirmed the Dewald Brevis dismissal.

The incident has fueled the debate around the level of umpiring in a league as big as the IPL. While CSK has lost, it will always remain a question whether the decision cost them the win. In a chase of 214, CSK threatened to hunt down the mammoth total before fumbling by just two runs. Nonetheless, there has never been any action observed against such decisions. However, it is quite plausible for CSK to lose some points in the fair play list as Jadeja confronted the umpire for allowing the review of the dismissal.
