India’s legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League. Ashwin’s sudden announcement took all his fans by surprise. In a social media post, Ashwin thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Indian Premier League for giving him the opportunity to showcase his mettle at the biggest stage. He also expressed his desire to play in other T20 leagues around the world, and it’s perhaps the reason why he called time on his IPL career. It is worth noting that the BCCI don’t allow its players to participate in non-Indian leagues unless they have retired from international cricket and the IPL.

According to a Telegraph Sport report, Ravichandran Ashwin has a keen interest in participating in The Hundred competition in England. Following the sale of stakes in the franchises earlier this year, the Hundred tournament will be rebranded next year. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has sold 49% stakes in six of the eight franchises to various investors, including IPL team owners. Indian groups have acquired the franchises based at Old Trafford, Headingley, the Ageas Bowl, and the Oval. Ashwin is likely to play for one of these teams.

How did Ashwin fare in the last IPL season?

Ravichandran Ashwin returned to the Chennai Super Kings for the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League. But sadly, his performance wasn’t satisfactory. Ashwin played nine matches, picking just seven wickets at an economy of close to 10. Not just him, many other big names failed to live up to the billing as CSK finished at the bottom of the table.

Ravichandran Ashwin has picked 187 wickets in 220 IPL matches at an economy of 7.2. Overall, he has played 330 T20 games and picked 317 wickets. Ashwin made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings in the 2009 edition. He spent six seasons with the Yellow Army and built a reputation as one of the best off-spinners in the competition. After CSK were suspended due to match-fixing allegations, Ashwin played two seasons for Rising Pune Supergiants. Althouhg, he missed the entire 2017 season due to a sports hernia injury. He then captained Kings XI Punjab in 2018 and 2019.

Ashwin was a pivotal figure in the Rajasthan Royals’ team between the 2022 and 2024 editions of IPL. He made a return to his former team, Chennai Super Kings, this year.
