Ravichandran Ashwin makes a bold statement on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of IND vs ENG first T20I
Following the Indian team's recent 0-2 T20I series loss to Ireland, calls to include Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the playing XI have intensified. There has been long-standing speculation about his debut, given his recent form. However, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin holds a different perspective on the matter.
Ashwin believes that had Sooryavanshi been given a chance and failed to perform, the situation could have backfired completely. Critics would have questioned why a senior player—specifically one who played a crucial role in the 2026 T20 World Cup victory—was dropped to accommodate him. He further added that sitting on the sidelines would be beneficial for the 15-year-old kid, as he could closely observe his teammates' mistakes and avoid repeating them when he eventually gets his opportunity.
"Let's say Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was given his debut against Ireland, but he played and failed in these two matches, would this (narrative) be reversed? In all honesty, everything would be reversed. Everyone would say, 'Vaibhav Suryavanshi can hit in the IPL, but he can't play in seaming, sporting conditions'," Ashwin said.
Ravichandran Ashwin noted that whenever a batter attempts to play aggressive T20 cricket in seaming conditions, the likelihood of failure increases; batting in such conditions is never easy.
"In such conditions - be it Vaibhav, Abhishek or Sanju - if you play in the same T20 template, there will be chances of getting out. That is why I said that it is not a bad experience to sit outside, within the team environment. You're learning from somebody else's experience," Ashwin added.
Ashwin further explained why the decision not to include Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the playing XI is not a bad thing for him."You can ask anyone. The most free and most valuable lessons can be learned when you sit in close quarters and watch the mistakes of high-performing individuals. You won't get a better platform than that," he stated.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is currently touring England with the Indian team. The five-match T20I series between India and England is set to begin on July 1 at Chester-le-Street. It remains to be seen whether Vaibhav will get the opportunity to make his international debut in this series or if he will have to wait longer. Since Sooryavanshi plays as an opening batsman, fitting him into the playing XI would require the management to either drop Sanju or Abhishek Sharma, or allow them at a different batting position; this would inevitably alter the team combination—something the management likely does not want to do at this stage.
