The Afghanistan cricket team is currently regarded as one of the fastest-rising cricket teams in the world. Over the past few years, the Afghan team has achieved success in defeating almost every opponent, with the exception of India. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, they successfully defeated England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands; subsequently, in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the team advanced to the semi-finals by defeating powerhouses like New Zealand and Australia. The team has also attained Test status in the sport. In Afghanistan’s success in cricket, current skipper Rashid Khan has played a pivotal role.

Recently, Rashid Khan released a book titled, From Streets to Stardom, a new publication that chronicles his journey from the streets of Nangarhar to global stardom in the world of cricket. In this book, he has made a startling revelation that is bound to leave his fans astonished. According to reports, Rashid has disclosed that he received offers of citizenship—along with opportunities to represent them in international cricket—from both India and Australia. However, he declined these offers, steadfast in his resolve not to play for any country other than Afghanistan.

For nearly a decade, Rashid Khan has been recognised as one of the most distinguished spinners in the cricketing world. It was precisely in light of his immense success that both India and Australia sought to grant him citizenship and extended offers for him to play for their respective national teams. Yet, demonstrating unwavering patriotism toward his homeland, Rashid turned down these offers and chose to continue playing solely for his own country. In the book, he states,

"I received such proposals from both Australia and India. However, I made it clear to them: if I am not going to play for my own country, I will not play for any other country either."

In the book, this particular anecdote involving India is recounted in even greater detail. Rashid reveals that this proposal came during the 2023 IPL season. By that time, he had established himself as one of the biggest names in the tournament and was a key player for the Gujarat Titans. He recounts that a team official informed him that a senior official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wished to meet with him.

Subsequently, Rashid provides the details of that conversation. He says,

"I went to meet him and greeted him. Our conversation began, and he said to me: 'The situation in your country is very dire. Come to India and settle down here. We will arrange for you to obtain Indian citizenship (documentation); you can live here and play cricket right here.' Hearing this, I was left stunned and did not know how to respond to him."

This is not the first time that the subject of offering Indian citizenship to Rashid Khan has come to light. This matter had previously surfaced during the 2018 IPL season as well. At that time, Rashid Khan was playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Impressed by his magnificent performance, fans were demanding that he be granted Indian citizenship. At the same time, the foreign minister Susma Swaraj had responded by saying that issues related to citizenship are a matter handled by the Ministry of Home Affairs, while Afghanistan's former President Ashraf Ghani had made it clear that Rashid is a symbol of national pride for Afghanistan.

Rashid Khan is currently playing in IPL 2026 for the Gujarat Titans. He is the frontline spinner and an important part of his team. So far, he has taken 6 wickets in 5 matches at an economy rate of 7.70.
