NZ vs PAK: New Zealand are excited after outplaying Pakistan
New Zealand continued their strong performance in the ongoing T20I series against Pakistan, securing a dominant five-wicket win in the second match at Dunedin on Tuesday. With this victory, the hosts now hold a commanding 2-0 lead in the five-match series and will be eager to extend their advantage in the upcoming fixtures. Following the match, New Zealand’s captain, Michael Bracewell, expressed his satisfaction with the team's overall performance, emphasizing their exciting and aggressive brand of cricket. After winning the toss, New Zealand opted to field first, a decision that paid off handsomely. Their bowlers once again dominated the Pakistani batters, restricting them to just 135/9 in a rain-affected 15-over game.
Jacob Duffy, Ben Sears, James Neesham, and Ish Sodhi all made vital contributions with the ball, claiming two wickets each. Despite a valiant 46 off 28 balls from Salman Agha, Pakistan struggled to find any stability, with New Zealand’s bowlers keeping them under constant pressure. Bracewell praised his bowlers for their adaptability in the challenging conditions, highlighting their ability to execute the game plan effectively. The skipper’s leadership and the team’s collective effort in both bowling and chasing the target put them in a commanding position in the series, and New Zealand will be keen to finish the series with a clean sweep.
"Very good bowling performance. We bowled well into the wind. The wicket has been under cover. There was extra bounce on it. The death bowlers bowled really well. We were happy at the half time. It was tough bowling into the wind. Tried to hit it into the wind. We have been playing some good cricket. The guys are hitting the ball well. The bowlers are hitting the right lines. It was pretty cold but hopefully we played some entertaining cricket," stated New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell during the post-match interview.
New Zealand chased down 136 with ease, thanks to an explosive opening partnership between Tim Seifert (45 off 22 balls) and Finn Allen (38 off 16 balls). Allen was aggressive right from the start, hitting three sixes off Mohammad Ali in the second over, while Seifert followed up with four sixes in a single over off Shaheen Afridi. The duo added a quick-fire 66 runs off just 29 balls, putting New Zealand on course for a comfortable win. Despite Pakistan fighting back with a few quick wickets, Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner ensured no further setbacks, guiding the team to victory with 11 balls to spare.
Although Pakistan showed improvement from the first T20I, they were still outclassed by the Kiwis. Skipper Agha Salman acknowledged that their powerplay struggles with both bat and ball continued to hinder their progress. The bowlers found it tough to contain New Zealand’s aggressive top order, and the batting failed to build meaningful partnerships. Pakistan’s efforts were not enough to stop the Kiwis, who maintained control throughout the match to claim another convincing win.
"It was freezing. It was a good game compared to the last game. We batted batter. Fielding was outstanding. Bowling in patches was good. The bounce we need to understand is different. After the powerplay, we bowled well. Haris bowled well. We need to be better in the powerplay. As a batting unit, we need to have better powerplay. And same as a bowling unit as well," said Pakistan captain Agha Salman.
