Without much of doubt, the scars are still very much fresh for every Indian cricket fan from the heartbreaking ICC ODI World Cup semi-final loss suffered at the hands of New Zealand in 2019. MS Dhoni’s run-out in the World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand remains a poignant memory for Indian cricket fans. The sight of Martin Guptill’s direct hit, which dismissed the veteran Dhoni, marked a crushing blow to India’s World Cup aspirations and signaled the end of Dhoni's illustrious international career. The heartbreak was intensified by the fact that the semi-final was Dhoni’s last game for India, making it an unforgettable and sorrowful moment for fans.

I knew that will be my last World Cup says MS Dhoni

In reflecting on this loss, Dhoni has shared that it took him considerable time to come to terms with the defeat. Despite this emotional setback, he chose to retire from international cricket on August 15, 2020. His retirement marked the end of an era, but Dhoni’s involvement in cricket did not cease entirely. He continued to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), showcasing his enduring talent and commitment to the game. In 2024, he passed the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad, yet remained an integral player for the team.

Dhoni’s perspective on the semifinal loss underscores his resilience. He has emphasized the importance of optimism and maintaining a positive outlook, even in the face of significant setbacks. For Dhoni, the key lies in acknowledging one’s best efforts and moving forward with hope and determination. This mindset reflects his approach to both his playing career and life beyond the cricket field.

"It was a difficult one because I knew that this will be my last World Cup, so it would have been good to be on the winning side. It was heartbreak moment, so we accepted the result and we tried to move on. Time thoda lagta hai aur World Cup ke baad thoda time mil bhi jata hai. Maine toh uske baad international khela nahi hai toh mujhe toh kaafi time mila hai. (It takes time and one gets some time after the World Cup. I haven't played any international after that, so I got a lot of time). So, yes, it was a heartbreak but at the same time you have to get out of it. So you just accept that you tried your best, but you were not able to win it," former Indian captain MS Dhoni said as quoted by NDTV Sports.

After the 2019 World Cup, India’s quest for ICC glory faced several setbacks. In the T20 World Cup 2021, the team, led by Virat Kohli, fell short in the group stage. Their disappointment continued as they lost the World Test Championship 2021 final to New Zealand. Following these defeats, Rohit Sharma took over as captain. Under his leadership, India struggled further, losing the World Test Championship 2023 final to Australia, and then the World Cup 2023 final, also to Australia.

Despite these challenges, the Indian team managed to break their trophy drought with a significant victory. On June 29, 2024, in Barbados, they clinched the T20 World Cup title by defeating South Africa in the final. This win marked a triumphant return to the top for Indian cricket and provided a much-needed boost to the team’s morale and confidence.
