MS Dhoni available for the CSK vs SRH IPL 2026 match? Here’s the update

Since the beginning of IPL 2026, fans have been eagerly awaiting MS Dhoni on the pitch, but he hasn't been able to play during any match of the tournament due to a calf injury. At every Chennai Super Kings match, fans flock to the stadium hoping to finally witness Dhoni's batting, but time and again, they are met only with disappointment. 

However, on May 18, 2026—during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium—the fans' wish may finally come true. According to reports, MS Dhoni is set to take the field for the very first time in IPL 2026. This holds particular significance as it marks CSK's final match of the season at Chepauk—implying that Dhoni will likely be stepping out today to play his last-ever IPL match at this venue. Ahead of the match, Dhoni sweated it out extensively during net sessions, engaging in a prolonged batting practice. Following this session, fan expectations have soared, with many now believing that "Thala" will once again—and perhaps for the very last time—be seen playing in his home fortress, right in front of his adoring home crowd.

Despite not having played a single match in IPL 2026 so far, Dhoni has been seen training in the nets alongside a significant portion of the CSK squad right from the start. However, Dhoni did not travel with the team for certain away matches, nor has he been spotted in the stadium during any CSK match so far—circumstances that have raised questions regarding his availability for future IPL 2026 fixtures. This match could prove to be a highly emotional occasion for both Dhoni and his fans. Chepauk has long served as Dhoni's fortress, and he himself has stated in a couple of interviews that his final match would likely take place at Chepauk. All these factors increase the likelihood that Dhoni will play in this match.

A must-win game for CSK

Following their defeat against LSG in their previous match, CSK's hopes of reaching the playoffs suffered a major setback; however, the results of Sunday's fixtures—specifically, Punjab Kings' loss to RCB and Delhi Capitals' victory over Rajasthan Royals—have once again bolstered CSK's playoff aspirations. CSK currently sits in 5th place on the points table with 12 points from 6 matches. To secure their spot in the playoffs, they must win both of their upcoming matches at all costs. From this juncture, even a single defeat could extinguish CSK's hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.

MS Dhoni has long been regarded as a player for the big occasions; moving forward, if Dhoni decides to play in IPL 2026, it would undoubtedly provide a massive morale boost to the CSK squad, and the team would strive to win a record 6th title for him.
