Monty Panesar backs Shubman Gill for the India vs England Test series
Former England spinner Monty Panesar has shared his views on Shubman Gill's appointment as India's new Test captain, expressing confidence that the young batter will approach his game with greater maturity and responsibility. Gill was recently named India’s 37th Test skipper, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who bid farewell to the red-ball format. With big shoes to fill, the 25-year-old now finds himself at the helm of a side entering a transitional phase following the retirement of several key stalwarts. Gill’s first major challenge as captain will be the upcoming five-match Test series against England, beginning June 20.
The series also marks the start of both teams' campaigns in the 2025–2027 World Test Championship cycle, making it a crucial phase for India under new leadership. Panesar believes the added responsibility of captaincy will positively impact Gill’s batting, encouraging him to play with more focus and composure. Acknowledging Gill's immense talent and temperament, Panesar backed the young skipper to rise to the occasion and lead from the front against a strong English side. With the spotlight firmly on him, Gill has the opportunity to not only showcase his leadership credentials but also anchor India's batting order in what promises to be a fiercely contested series.
“I think Shubman Gill will be a good captain. He will bat well with responsibility. I think he will bat well with responsibility,” said former England cricketer Monty Panesar.
Shubman Gill, India’s newly appointed Test captain, has featured in 32 Test matches so far, amassing 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05. His record includes five centuries and seven half-centuries, showcasing his potential at the highest level. However, his performance in overseas conditions, particularly in England, leaves room for improvement. In three Tests played in England, Gill has managed only 88 runs, with a highest score of just 28. As he steps into the leadership role following the retirement of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Gill faces the challenge of not only leading a young Indian side but also significantly improving his own track record in foreign conditions. With the five-match Test series against England marking the start of India’s new World Test Championship (2025–27) cycle, Gill’s ability to adapt and deliver both as a batter and a captain will be closely watched by fans and critics alike.
"England will benefit from the fact that Virat and Rohit are not playing. Their experience could have been used for India. But they (Team India) are inexperienced. What happens with inexperience? How will India play against England? We know how England can play. It's possible that India will collapse,” Panesar concluded.
