India’s senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has found himself at the center of controversy once again, following serious allegations made by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. On July 4, Jahan shared a striking Instagram post accusing Shami of criminal misconduct, reigniting their long-standing legal and personal dispute that has remained in the public eye since 2018. The fresh accusations come just days after a significant ruling by the Calcutta High Court on July 2, which directed Shami to pay a total of INR 4 lakh per month as maintenance under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act.

According to the court’s order, INR 1.5 lakh is to be paid to Hasin Jahan for her personal expenses, while INR 2.5 lakh is to be allocated for the upkeep and welfare of their daughter, Aaira. The court also stated that this order would be applicable retrospectively, dating back to seven years ago—intensifying the financial and legal pressure on the cricketer. Jahan’s recent post has drawn widespread attention across social media platforms, further complicating Shami’s public image. While no official response has been made by Shami or his legal team yet, the allegations are likely to escalate the legal tussle between the two in the coming days.

Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan tied the knot in 2014 and became parents to a daughter in 2015. However, their marriage turned turbulent in 2018 when Jahan, a former model and cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders, made serious allegations against the cricketer. She accused Shami of domestic violence, dowry harassment, infidelity, and even alleged involvement in match-fixing. These claims triggered a prolonged and public legal battle, with Jahan asserting that Shami had not only severed financial support but also misused his earnings.

In 2023, a lower court awarded Jahan INR 50,000 per month for herself and INR 80,000 for their daughter. However, she appealed the ruling, arguing that the sum was inadequate considering Shami’s substantial income, reportedly exceeding INR 7 crore annually. Her legal team pushed for a revision, citing the need for fair maintenance aligned with the lifestyle and financial capabilities of the cricketer.

The Calcutta High Court recently passed a significant ruling in the ongoing legal battle between Mohammed Shami and his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. As per the new order, Shami is required to pay a total of INR 4 lakh per month—INR 1.5 lakh for Jahan and INR 2.5 lakh for their daughter—effective from 2017. This means the Indian fast bowler also faces a large amount in arrears. The decision, made under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, marks a substantial increase from the previous maintenance amount.

Despite the gravity of the accusations levelled against him, including domestic violence and financial neglect, Shami has consistently denied all claims. He has maintained his innocence throughout the legal proceedings and continues to focus on his cricketing career. However, he was notably absent from the ongoing England vs India five-match Test series, reportedly due to lingering fitness issues and rehabilitation.
