Mohammed Shami set his sights on completing unfinished business in the 2027 World Cup

India's senior star right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami has been away from international cricket for a long while. He played his last international match during the Champions Trophy 2025 final but has been out of the national team ever since. Selectors have consistently deemed him unfit, stating that he must prove his fitness in domestic cricket to earn a spot in the squad. Although Shami has played domestic cricket and IPL regularly in an effort to make a comeback, he has not yet returned to the national side.

Recent reports suggest that Shami might get a chance to return during the home ODI series against the West Indies in September, news that has delighted his fans.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami recently appeared in a media interview where he expressed his desire to play in the 2027 World Cup. He stated that he wants to play for the country and will give his 100% whenever the opportunity arises, though his return to the team ultimately rests with the selectors. He is making every effort to stage a comeback.

“I am working hard every day and staying ready. My focus is only on performing well. Whenever Team India gives me an opportunity, I will give my 100% for the country. I want to play the ICC World Cup 2027, and I’m working hard for it. But the final decision is always in the hands of the selectors,” Mohammed Shami said.

The Indian team is set to play its next series against Sri Lanka, starting on August 15. This Test series is crucial; a defeat for India here would make reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final nearly impossible. Following the Test series, the Indian T20 squad, led by Shreyas Iyer, will travel to Japan for the Asian Games, while the ODI team will host the West Indies at home.
