MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020. During his tenure as captain of Team India, Dhoni ushered in a golden period for Indian cricket. The skipper won the 2007 T20 World Cup and followed it up with the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup. Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the best captains in Indian cricket history. However, amid loud cheers for the former World Cup-winning skipper, Dhoni has now found a staunch critic. While Dhoni is often credited as the man behind building the careers of several significant Indian cricketers, Manoj Tiwary has named the former captain as a reason behind his early exit from the Indian team.

"I don't know what went wrong": Manoj Tiwary name drops MS Dhoni as he talks about his early exit from Indian cricket

Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has claimed that MS Dhoni, former coach Duncan Fletcher, and the selectors did not give him a fair chance despite a stellar performance. Tiwary had scored an unbeaten 104 against the West Indies and was named Player of the Match after India’s 34-run victory. Tiwary, who retired on August 8, 2023, feels that he lacked adequate support from the team management, a factor that he believes shortened his international career.

"I'm not the one who will be able to answer this question. I think MS Dhoni, Duncan Fletcher, and the selectors will be the ones who will be able to answer that because till now, I haven't got any answer. Furthermore, I'm not someone who will call up the coach or the selectors or the captain at that time to answer me this," Manoj Tiwary said in a recent interaction.

"But I've earlier said that whenever I come across to MS Dhoni, definitely I'll ask him what are the main reasons why I was not given the opportunity after scoring 100. So till now, I have no clue what went wrong, what were their thought process at that point of time. It is a question which needs to be asked to the ones who have made that decision and who were there at that time were taking the calls" he added.

During his IPL tenure, Manoj represented four franchises, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals. His last appearance in the IPL came in 2018. Across 98 IPL matches, he accumulated 1,695 runs, including seven half-centuries, with a highest score of 75*. His final international outing was a T20I against Zimbabwe in 2015. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has officially retired from all forms of international cricket. He recently participated in IPL 2025, returning as captain of the Chennai Super Kings after the regular skipper was ruled out due to an elbow injury.
