Kuldeep Yadav is now hailed as one of the finest spin bowlers across all three formats for the Indian cricket team. His journey to becoming a household name among Indian cricket fans has been nothing short of inspirational. Over the past 7–8 years, he has grown into a crucial asset for Team India, showcasing his skill and consistency across formats. However, his path to success was far from easy. As a teenager, Kuldeep faced a heartbreaking setback when he was not selected for the Uttar Pradesh Under-15 team at the age of 13. The rejection hit him hard, leading to a phase of self-doubt and despair. In a candid interview, he once revealed that he even contemplated suicide during that difficult period.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Kuldeep refused to give up on his dream. Through years of relentless hard work, dedication, and perseverance, he overcame the odds and steadily climbed the ranks. His unique left-arm wrist spin has troubled some of the best batters in the world, earning him a reputation as a match-winner. Today, Kuldeep is not just a regular member of the Indian squad—he’s one of the team’s go-to bowlers across formats, embodying resilience and determination through his remarkable journey.

Who is Kuldeep Yadav?

Kuldeep Yadav was born on December 14, 1994, in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, and raised in Kanpur. Now 30 years old, he is known for his rare left-arm wrist spin, also called Chinaman bowling—a unique art in international cricket. Kuldeep comes from a humble background. His father, Ram Singh Yadav, works in the brick industry, while his mother, Usha Yadav, is a homemaker. He has three sisters: Madhu, Anita, and Anushka. It was his father who first recognised his potential and took him to a cricket coach. Initially, Kuldeep wanted to become a left-arm fast bowler, inspired by greats like Wasim Akram and Zaheer Khan. However, his coach noticed his natural ability to spin the ball and guided him towards wrist spin.

Kuldeep Yadav began his cricket journey with India’s U-19 team in 2012 at just 17. He shot to fame in the 2014 U-19 World Cup by becoming the first Indian to take a hat-trick in the tournament. His domestic success continued with an impressive 2016–17 Ranji Trophy season, where he scored 466 runs and took 35 wickets for Uttar Pradesh. Kuldeep also played for KKR in the 2015 Champions League, claiming 6 wickets in 5 games. He made his international debut in 2017 across all three formats, starting with a Test against Australia and later playing ODIs and T20Is against the West Indies.

Kuldeep has achieved several major milestones, including being a key part of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy-winning squads. He is the first left-arm wrist spinner to play Test cricket for India and the first Indian to take two international hat-tricks. With 306 wickets in 156 matches, he remains one of India's premier spinners.

Kuldeep Yadav IPL career

After impressing in the 2015 Champions League, Kuldeep Yadav made his IPL debut for KKR in 2016 and played with them until 2020, taking 40 wickets. However, a knee injury in 2021 required surgery, forcing him to miss the entire IPL season and a significant chunk of international cricket. His form declined, and he lost his spot in the national side. Ahead of IPL 2022, KKR released him, and he was picked up by Delhi Capitals for ₹2 crore—a notable drop from the ₹5.8 crore he previously earned. Kuldeep made a strong comeback, claiming 21 wickets that season. His performance earned him a return to Team India. In total, he has taken 102 IPL wickets—62 for Delhi Capitals and 40 for KKR.
