KL Rahul opens up on IPL captaincy challenges
KL Rahul showcased a refreshed and more expressive version of himself during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season after moving to the Delhi Capitals from the Lucknow Super Giants. He enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring 539 runs at an excellent strike rate, reaffirming his value as a top-order batter. Interestingly, despite speculation before the season that he might take over the captaincy, Rahul ultimately chose to play purely as a specialist batter. Delhi Capitals instead went ahead with Axar Patel as captain.
Why KL Rahul is not the DC captain in IPL 2026?
Rahul later revealed why he declined the leadership role. He explained that captaining an IPL franchise brings intense scrutiny, not only from coaches and teammates but also from team owners, who often demand answers on tactical decisions and on-field strategies. Without naming anyone directly, he alluded to his unpleasant public incident with LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka in 2024. Rahul suggested that owners should not interfere in cricketing decisions or question split-second choices made during a match. By avoiding the captaincy, he felt he could focus solely on his batting and contribute more freely to the team without the added stress of off-field pressures.
"Captaincy in IPL feels like you are being questioned constantly, why opposition scored 200 and you scored 120, why they are getting more spin. Some of these questions you are never asked throughout the year, because the coaches know about this," stated former LSG skipper KL Rahul.
KL Rahul has been confirmed as one of Delhi Capitals’ retained players for the IPL 2026 season, signalling the franchise’s continued trust in his experience and versatility. Much like last year, he is expected to take on the role of a specialist batter rather than a leadership position, allowing him to focus solely on his game. His adaptability will likely see him batting across multiple positions depending on the team’s needs and match situations. Additionally, he may be called upon to don the wicketkeeping gloves on occasion, adding further depth to the Capitals’ playing XI.
After delivering a stellar 2025 season with the bat, Rahul will aim to build on that momentum. The Karnataka star is known for his consistency, composure, and ability to anchor or accelerate as required, qualities that will be crucial as Delhi look to make a strong push for the playoffs. He is expected to play a central role once again, providing stability at the top or middle order and guiding the younger players around him. With renewed confidence and a clear role in the setup, Rahul will be eager to contribute significantly to Delhi’s ambitions in the upcoming season.
Last season, the Delhi Capitals narrowly missed out on a place in the playoffs, finishing fifth on the points table and falling just short of a top-four spot. Despite being part of the IPL since its inaugural edition, the Delhi-based franchise is still chasing its first championship title, a long-standing aspiration that continues to drive the team each year. With a strong core of retained players heading into the 2026 season and a healthy purse available for the IPL Auction, DC now have an excellent opportunity to assemble a well-balanced, title-contending squad.
The management is expected to target impact players who can complement their existing strengths while addressing key gaps that proved costly last year. The franchise’s focus will be on creating a cohesive unit capable of maintaining consistency throughout the season. Buoyed by stability and resources, Delhi will once again set their sights firmly on securing their maiden IPL trophy.
