Senior fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been officially ruled out of Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, dealing a blow to the defending champions just days before the tournament gets underway. Cricket Australia confirmed the development only a day ahead of the start of the expanded twenty-team competition, bringing an end to speculation surrounding the seamer’s fitness. Hazlewood has been managing an injury in recent weeks, and despite ongoing rehabilitation efforts, he has been unable to recover in time to be considered match-ready for the global event. Australia’s chief selector Tony Dodemaide acknowledged that the team management had been optimistic about Hazlewood’s chances of returning during the latter stages of the tournament.

However, further medical assessments have indicated that the pacer will require an extended recovery period, making his participation impossible. Dodemaide emphasized that the decision was taken with the player’s long-term fitness in mind rather than risking a premature comeback. In light of Hazlewood’s absence, Australia have opted not to rush into naming a replacement. The selection panel is expected to closely monitor the squad’s progress and injury status before making any additions. A replacement will only be named if deemed absolutely necessary during the business end of the tournament, reflecting a cautious and flexible approach from the Australian camp.

"We were hopeful Josh would be back to match fitness by the Super Eights stage, but the latest indications (are) he is still some time away. Trying to accelerate his programme will carry too much of a risk. We will not be naming a replacement player immediately. We feel we are well covered for the initial games so will make any later decisions based on priority need at the time," stated Australian Chief Selector Tony Dodemaide.

In a significant boost for Australia ahead of the league stage of the tournament, star players Tim David and  Nathan Ellis have both been declared fully fit by the team management. Their availability comes as welcome news for the Australian camp, particularly after recent concerns surrounding injuries within the squad. Tim David’s presence strengthens Australia’s middle order with his explosive batting and finishing ability, while Nathan Ellis adds depth and versatility to the pace attack, especially in pressure situations at the death.

Adding to the positive momentum, experienced leg-spinner  Adam Zampa has also been cleared to play and will be available for Australia’s opening match of the tournament. Zampa is set to feature in the Group B opener against Ireland on February 11, a fixture that could set the tone for Australia’s campaign. His inclusion provides balance to the bowling unit and offers a reliable spin option on conditions expected to assist slower bowlers.

The confirmation of fitness for these key players has eased concerns within the Australian setup, particularly following the setback of Josh Hazlewood’s withdrawal. With several first-choice players now ready for action, the team management will be hopeful of starting the tournament on a strong note and building early momentum in a competitive group stage.
