Jofra Archer set to play the second India vs England Test at Edgbaston? Rob Key reveals
Jofra Archer was named in the England squad for the second Test against India, scheduled at Edgbaston in Birmingham. While back in action after an extended, injury-marred hiatus from red-ball cricket, it has not been confirmed whether the speedster will join the England playing XI in Birmingham. Discussions are rife, with experts like Nasser Hussain advising against rushing Archer hastily. However, days before the second India vs England Test kicks off at Edgbaston, the English board's managing director, Rob Key, has delved into the discussion surrounding Archer’s return to the combination.
Rob Key sheds light on the possibility of Jofra Archer playing the second India vs England Test
Rob Key, the managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board, has shed light on the potential inclusion of Jofra Archer playing the second India vs England Test in Birmingham. Archer, who recently returned to first-class action for Sussex in the County Championship, has been added to the national squad for the upcoming contest at Edgbaston.
The fast bowler's comeback to England's Test setup comes after a four-year hiatus, with his last red-ball appearance also coming against India back in 2021. Speaking on Archer’s readiness, Key hinted that the pacer could feature in at least one of the next two Tests. He also didn’t dismiss the possibility of Archer taking the new ball in the upcoming Birmingham Test. Key further added that if the team management feels Archer still needs more game time before stepping into the Test arena, he may return to Sussex to feature in the final two County Championship fixtures.
“I would imagine [that he will play at least one of the next two Tests]. As I stand here now, that's where it's heading, but who knows? He could bowl the first ball of the [Edgbaston] Test. All options are available,” Key said.
“Yeah, so if he's not, there's a chance he can go back and play the last couple of games of the championship if we feel that's the best thing for him. It might be the case even if he doesn't play at Edgbaston that having him in and around is the best thing. But then he could walk out there and bowl the first ball of the test match. Who knows? All options are available,” he added.
In his return to red-ball cricket, Archer delivered a steady spell, picking up 1 for 32 in 18 overs, and also made a handy contribution with the bat, scoring 31 off 34 balls. Sussex is set to face Warwickshire in Hove from June 29, which could be Archer’s next outing if he’s not selected for the second Test.
The 30-year-old, who has played just two Tests against India, has claimed four wickets at an average of 30.50. While excitement surrounds his potential comeback, several cricket pundits have cautioned against rushing Jofra Archer back into the rigours of Test cricket given his history of injuries. With the second Test scheduled to begin on July 2 in Birmingham, all eyes remain on the final call regarding Archer’s selection.
