Jasprit Bumrah — The national treasure of Indian cricket
The Indian cricket team has successfully qualified for the T20 World Cup 2026 finals after defeating England by 7 runs in the second semi-final at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Thanks to Sanju Samson’s brilliant 89-run knock, the Indian team posted a mammoth total of 253/7 after being invited to bat first. In response, England could manage to score 246 runs. This will be India's 4th T20 World Cup final.
After the conclusion of the first innings, it felt like the Indian team would easily win the match, but England’s Jacob Bethell had a different plan. He scored 105 runs in 48 balls, including 8 fours and 7 sixes.
Thanks to his brilliant innings, England almost chased down this seemingly insurmountable target. But Jasprit Bumrah once again proved to be the biggest obstacle to England's victory. While almost all bowlers had economy rates above 10 throughout the match, Jasprit Bumrah conceded runs at an economy rate of just 8.20 in this semi-final. And in the end, this margin became the difference between victory and defeat. Just because of Bumrah2’s crucial 16th and 18th overs, where he conceded just 8 & 6 runs, respectively, India managed to restrict the Three Lions to 246 and secure their place in the finals.
After the match, Sanju Samson became the player of the match for his brilliant 89 runs, but Sanju also praised Jasprit Bumrah.
“All credit goes to Jasprit Bumrah, the world-class bowler, a once-in-a-generation bowler. I think that's what he delivered today. This (award) should go to him, actually. If we didn't bowl that way in the death overs, I think I would not be standing here. All credit goes to the bowlers for how they backed themselves in the tough conditions.”
Captain Suryakumar Yadav also lauded Jasprit Bumrah for his outstanding bowling, which helped India make a strong comeback in the game.
"They were always in the game and always in the chase. But the way Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and the other bowlers pulled the game back was unbelievable. We all know what he’s capable of and what he’s done for India over the years (on Jasprit Bumrah). He did the same thing again today, raised his hand, and showed character to pull the game away from them. It was a special bowling performance."
Jasprit Bumrah made the target difficult for England by hitting consistent yorkers in the death overs, which ultimately proved decisive. India has reached the final, where they will face New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on March 8.
Jasprit Bumrah's stats in the T20 World Cup 2026
Jasprit Bumrah has taken 10 wickets in 7 matches, with an outstanding economy rate of 6.62. His best performance came against South Africa when he took 3 wickets. He has bowled 24 overs in this world, in which he conceded 159 runs.
Bumrah was the second leading wicket-taker in the 2024 T20 World Cup, with 15 wickets. Whenever the Indian team faces a tough situation while bowling, both the team and the entire nation turn their attention to Jasprit Bumrah. Because everyone knows, Bumrah can do magic from any crucial situation. Remember the 2024 T20 World Cup, where India was restricted to 30 runs off the final 30 balls, but Bumrah brought the team back there too and gave India a crushing victory.
After India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli humorously said he would gladly sign a petition to declare fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah a “national treasure” and even the “8th Wonder of the World.” During the champions' celebrations at Wankhede Stadium, Gaurav Kapoor raised the question
"I am thinking of signing a petition to declare Jasprit Bumrah as a national treasure. Will you sign it?" Without hesitation, Kohli responded, "I will sign it right now."
Virat Kohli did not stop there and praised Bumrah, saying that
"I like to name a guy who brought us back in this T20 World Cup again, again and again in every difficult situation; this is Jasprit Bumrah. Jasprit Bumrah is a once-in-a-generation bowler. We are lucky that he plays for us."
